Folks,
I recently made some changes to my e30's steering setup, and wouldn't mind some input from the group.
What I've done:
Installed Purple Tag 330i Steering Rack
New Inner & Outer Tie Rods
>---< This is where things began to feel different
Momo Steering Wheel & Adapter
I had installed my rack and such when I was still using the original airbag wheel. The steering felt light and nimble.
Having only driven a few times (less than 50miles), I installed my Momo hub and made up a spacer to counter the removal of the airbag wheel.
When I tightened everything up (the center nut) the steering was very stiff and wouldn't self-center. I loosened the nut partially and things have been a little better, but not right.
I've tried:
- Loosening the big 32mm collar down the column
- Readjusting the UJ higher up on the column, in case I over tightened the steering wheel nut, pulling the column up slightly and perhaps binding the UJ.
- Removing the wheel and hammering on the column with the nut on, to push it back down in case I had overtightened it and tweeked it up slightly, causing it to bind.
No difference.
What would cause this? Airbag spacer too thick? I don't see how that'd make anything tighter....unless it compresses that springy thing on the column too much...?
