SOLD!
NOTE: I will be driving and working on this car regularly for the next few weeks to improve it, etc. See "EDIT" lines below.
For sale here is a manual 1991 325iX with 197xxx miles. I recently bought this car as a replacement for one of my other iXs but it turns out the issues with that car weren't as bad as I had expected, so I ended up just fixing that one instead. So, this one is up for grabs.
The good stuff:
The car is diamond black with nice tan heated comfort interior and a ski pass back seat. The paint is okay but the clear coat is flaking in spots (hood/roof). It also has a manual crank sunroof, decently clean carpet and nice heated seats with little damage. It also has an extremely clean original stock radio and OBC, no oranging in either. The front windows both work well, and the back windows are also functional, though the passenger rear seems a little bit sluggish.
When I bought it the first thing I did was the head gasket and timing belt/tensioner pulley. The PO had done a compression test on it before I bought it and one of the cylinders was slightly low (around 140 compared to ~170 on the rest) so that was the first thing I wanted to do. While in there I also adjusted valves. The timing belt tensioner pulley had some wiggle in it so it was replaced with the timing belt. I was going to do the water pump as well but found that it had been recently done and had zero play in it so I left it alone. The ignition rotor and cap were in passable condition, but could be replaced down the line and the car has the bavauto high performance ignition wires with new spark plugs. I flushed the radiator and put fresh coolant in the system. I also replaced the hood cable which was broken. The hood lock itself could stand to be replaced as the spring isn't in the best shape but it still functions correctly. I also replaced the broken odometer gears and the odometer worked for a bit but I think it needs new board batteries as its since died. The car has had a recent oil change and the PO did the fuel filter and a brand new Bosch MAF. Recently installed a spare ICV and the car revs and comes back down to a nice steady idle, just as it should.
EDIT: A new alternator has been installed and is working great. Blower motor and housing assembly has been lubricated and tended to so the heat works better than ever.
The car sits on 16 inch wheels and almost new all season tires with a good amount of tread left. It also has Bilsteins on all four corners which all seem to be firm and in good shape. THE AWD WORKS GREAT! This was one of the main reasons I bought the car in the first place. It passed the jack test with flying colors and should be great in the snow. The heat works and the entire AC system is present but needs a new condenser and a belt to work (theoretically). The brakes are in good shape but could be due for pads soonish. The car has a VT inspection that it good until mid next year.
NOTE: The car will be sold with the 16" wheels it has on it currently, but I also have a set of stock 15" IX weaves with winter tires on it that I would let go with the car for extra.
The not so good:
EDIT: I replaced the drivers side lock cylinder and now all the locks are functional, including the trunk lock. The power locking system is still not working.
- There is a something slightly loose in the front drivers side, possibly a ball joint. The steering has some resistance in certain spots so that could be part of it. I had planned to fix that but on deciding to sell the car I thought it would be best left to the new owners so I haven't looked in to it.
- There is a good sized dent in the passenger side and rust is coming through on the door below the lock and in the usual fenders/battery tray regions so between that and the clear coat peeling, the car does show its age. The undercarriage is pretty clean. The exhaust has a slight hole in the muffler that has been patched with heat wrapping but could stand to be replaced.
Summary:
In short, this car has some potential for someone looking for an awesome winter car. As I said, the AWD on this thing is in really good working order and the car shifts well, so this would be perfect for that. It needs a bit of work to get it there but will be a great car for the next owners. She has a lot of life left in her.
Asking $3200. Please message me with any questions or interest. I have 2 other iXs so I am relatively knowledgable on them and would be happy to chat about it. Thanks for looking!
