325i ca 325e engine visual differences

    Looking at purchasing a 1987 325
Cluster was swapped by PO, cluster is an I cluster(6k redline)
How to tell if it’s an e or an I engine?

Assuming that nobody did a swap of any kind. Just by glancing at it the intake is different and valve cover too. The e will have a cold start valve on the pass side of the intake. To where the I dont.

The e will also have 2 reference sensors going to the divers side of the bell housing and connecting at a bracket lower block near the starter

That's actually a reflection of the year not the engine type.

Correct. The expansion tank was moved in 9/1987.

easy one that i tend to look at first is the placement of the ICV.

the Etas are on the passenger side of the intake and the I one is located right before the throttle body on the drivers side of the intake.

The engine blocks are identical, not easy to tell what rotating assembly is in there, BUT, the head casting number is a dead give away. Difficult to see, but it's located in the center of the head, driver side, directly between #3 and #4 intake runner, just below the valve cover. If it ends with 200, it's a full 325e engine as the 325i rotating assembly absolutely cannot work with an eta head. If it's an 885 head, you may have a "hybrid" type 327i combination.
