How can I tell what top hats I have

Aside from taking the whole strut apart, is there any way I can tell if I have the e90 top hats or e30? I bought the car used and the PO isn't certain/didn't replace them. It has H&R springs but seems to sit quite a bit lower than other cars on the same setup.

Well, my stock hats were black, and my E90 hats look like natural metal (probably galvanized).
