    An easier thing to do in case you actually got a faulty alternator is to disconnect the battery and see if the car stays running. If your alternator is good it should run for a good long time before the motor dies. If the car shuts off when you disconnect the battery then you are looking at a faulty alternator. And subsequently the alternator has probably killed your battery. Your battery can only be recharged so many times before it just simply wont charge anymore.
