Depends how much you can do yourself / how lucky you are finding parts.
My swap was around $2800 in the end (without engineering, which varies from state to state so I won't comment on that) , but that included a couple of big ticket items including a $900 custom exhaust - you can get away with a 325i one, and a $600 HD clutch kit - if using an M30 gearbox, you could just use the stock e28 or e34 flywheel & clutch.
I did pick up my M30 for $100 though, and my gearbox for $150 - so was lucky on some parts. Fortunately both were in excellent condition.
