Motor / Transmission Mount Bushing Opinions

Hey Guys, been doing some searching around for information on transmission mounts since Steve pointed out how much my shifter was moving around in his video from autox this weekend. Some of this movement is also due to my shifter bushings being worn out which will also be fixed soon.

Anyways found two threads with some good feedback on here.

    http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=117460

Looks like if I plan to keep this car as a DD I can go with poly/solid engine mounts and rubber/poly transmission mounts. My preference is to stay the middle of the road with performance and drivability. New mounts alone will make a big difference.

I am on the fence about poly transmission mounts though and just want to know if anyone has them installed on a DD and what their opinion is the brand they have.

    Options range from:

    IE (70D) http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/E30-...hanetrans.html

    AKG: Polyurethane 75D or 80A

Vorshlag: 95A or 80A Orange (recommended for dual duty track & street use)

    Stock BMW: Rubber

By all means fill me in on any options you recommend that I may have missed.

    Cheers
    Brett

Your other option is the E21 rubber bushings. They are better/beefier than the stock E30 bushings. I was happy with them. I have the poly mounts now and definately transmits more noise and vibrations but tolerable. Dude on here sells the poly ones for $30/pair which is cheap enough to at least try them. E21 mounts are ~$15.

ok cool, a friend of mine mentioned the e21 bushings to me as well and they are also cheap enough to try out. Thanks for the info

just be careful of poly tranny mounts. u can go up to solid motor mounts if u want. im assuming u have an M20.

But if u go to the link youll see my opinion is some Poly motor mounts and E21 tranny mounts. all u have to buy is a bit and they fit
m20 is plenty. im simply a drifter.

use E46M3 OEM. or e36M3 OEM if you have them hanging out; should be same fit as e30 G260
            OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30

I'd get new rubber all the way around with the e21 transmission mounts. New rubber will make a huge difference.

Yeah I have decided against the poly trans mounts at this point. I read that thread as well so thanks for the install info, you are the third or fourth person to suggest this so I know it is worth it and will be going this route.

Thanks for the other feedback guys!

No problem. I myself havnt experienced poly trans mounts but I think its one of those things that REALLY are not necessary for a DD.

I have also heard that poly motor mounts and solid aluminum motor mounts feel pretty much the same also. im going to be looking at that i think when I turbo. thats IF the down pipe melts the one mount. Bavauto said it would take me a while to get them to me cause they were coming from a different warehouse but I got them like 2 days after I ordered them.
post your opinion after u install. good luck

OH and go for 80's or 90 motor mounts. mine are the AKG 75D's and i could have gone stiffer. my friend has stiffer mounts and it vibrates a lot more than mine. granted theyre in a Mazda speed3, stiffer is better up there. if i could do anything again I would have sought after the stiffest possible poly motor mounts and kept the e21 with AKG aluminum cups for the transmission

I have the vorshlag mounts. Engine and trans. Its a little more noisy day in and day out. A little increase in vibration. I noticed i need me drive line balanced after I rebuilt it LOL. I do get a little more drone on the freeway as well.

Will the e21 motor mounts work with the g240? Never heard of this option up until recently, and the tranny mounts are the only thing that's rubber left in the hooptie. Poly is a bit much for the tranny IMO. Considering options.

s52/s54 transmission mounts look identical to g260.... they are rubber and harder than the g260 units.

                            better planning required

okay an update from the weekend. I tried to bite off a bit more than I can chew and it came and bit me back.

                            Tried to accomplish three things:
                            Install UUC SSK w/ DSSR
                            Install e21 trans mounts
                            Install poly motor mounts

SSK install actually went pretty well up until when I went to install the DSSR. (I should note here that my car is an auto swap to manual done by a previous owner.) Shell is '90 but I found out the transmission is from an early model. DSSR won't fit an early model shift rod joint, I need to retro fit the shift rod joint from a late model to remedy this. Something I did not think to look into before I started. Either way I got the SSK installed and works great with my ZHP shift knob.

For the e21 mounts I found the right drill bit easily and the install there went well, just make sure you’ve for the right hardware! Luckily I had some left over from an old project.

And now the motor mounts. I was replacing these because the rubber ones installed on the car visually looked like they were being squished at a weird angle, most definitely deformed. Come to find out the reason for this is because I am missing the hood catch (part #11811128510) from both sides at the subframe. This in turn left me a little short of the proper points to line up the new bushings and left me with them sitting at a little angle on each side, not fully flush with the subframe or support brackets. I plan to swing by the junk yard tomorrow and hopefully snatch them from another car, but they will be tricky to remove.

Right now the motor has an odd vibration at low rpm, I assume because the motor mounts are not seated correctly, so I will give my final verdict on everything….if all goes well by Wednesday.
