any benifits of switching shift carriers?

So, I have an early '86 325 es. I need to pull the trans to replace the throwout bearing, and the shifter is loose in every direction, so all the bearings involved with that are needed, too. I have the stamped steal shift carrier.

Would it be wise to switch to the newer aluminum shift carrier? I think I would need to buy that bracket from the early euro M3, part number 25112225369 (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...81&hg=25&fg=05)

Are there benefits to this? Is it a better design? Would it last longer?

Your car has the sheet metal console huh? Must have just missed the cut or something. AFAIK, you don't need that extra bracket. The G260 should have an eyelets for the updated console. Should just bolt right on. The new style is better because you can use all kinds of shift levers with it and change them out from the top without having to drive the exhaust/driveshaft.
