    Plasma TVs - need info

So I'm in the market for a TV and I'm giving serious consideration to a plasma. My brother has one.....great picture quality, watching F1 on it is awesome. I've been starting to do some product reviews.....Google, YouTube mostly. What are some other sources out there? 42"-46" displays are ideal for my place. BestBuy and Costco have some nice options in my price range (up to $500-ish).

Talking with a few people at work to get feedback, Panasonic and Samsung get mentioned a lot as good options. Anyone here have one? How has the performance been? Any issues?

I purchased a Panisonic 50" Plasma last year for around $500. Great TV for the price and I still think plasma is the king for resonably priced TVs ie not 4k. Blacker blacks than most LED. The down side is they are heavy, not a big deal except when choosing a mount and installation. I got my TV at Best Buy on one of their end of the year sales. I found good review from CNET and Amazon, the higher the refresh rate the better.

Yep, picked up a 60" LG from HH Gregg last summer for $750 and it's awesome. Heavy as sin, but yea, gorgeous TV and stupid cheap.

I have a 50" but I rarely use it. Get an $800 dollar short throw projector and aim it at your wall for 100" goodness

Sucks unless you have the room correctly set up for a projector though (decent screen + darkened windows/great shades).

Nah, I just point it at my white wall. Works great. Don't even have shades in the living room but i also watch it at night so mileage may vary

I got this one last month: http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-W1080ST-1...s=benq+w1080st

the threads over at home theater sites said that it's pointless to spend big bucks on screens. Homemade, walls, and/or sheets work just as well until you spend big bucks on them and that's for specific features not necessarily fidelity. But again, depends on what you want to watch and when.

If you're really itching for a tv, though, I read the seiki (I think that's the brand) are really giving the big boys a run for their money in the 4k domain. Once you see a 4k it'll be hard to unsee it.

I'm sure it works great in your classroom, but it doesn't work well on textured walls, and it doesn't work well in the daytime.

Love my 52" LG, but as most have said, they are very heavy as the screen is smooth glass.
They also glare like hell in a bright room, so they are better in a dark room

and hot, too. At least mine is like a freaking space heater. In Sac with a 50" inch plasma unless tech has changed significantly in the past 3 years it'd be noticeable.

I'll never buy plasma again. 50" Samsung plasma developed red and green lines 2 years after purchase. Would have cost as much to fix as a new one.
what you did to this car is like getting a supermodel naked and willing to do anything you please. now here you are faced with ths once in a lifetime opportunity and then you squander it by making her fuck you in the butt with a 24" strap on. you are a sad, silly little boy.

If you're putting it in a relatively dark room with little natural light, and will be watching lots of action events/movies plasma is better. If the room is bright, has a decent amount of natural light and it's going to be used for daytime viewing or things like news/sports channels with tickers and logos on all the time, LCD/LED is better.

I have a 54" Panasonic G3. 4 or 5 years old and the picture looks perfect. My dad has a 56" after he saw mine. They do get hot and I guess they are heavy as people mentioned but compared to the old style it's way lighter. Plasmas don't have that tracer shit for fast action sports and what not, as I see with LCD. Looking at another TV to get this weekend also but don't know if I'm going with plasma, do want a smart TV though.

                            I have a PIO PRO-111FD.

Plasma has been proven to have the best overall picture regardless of room setting when compared to other technologies. Only OLED will surpass it and that is only if the big names want to produce it.

I would start at AVS Forum to see if any (preferably professionally calibrated) pre-owned units are available for sale in classifieds from Pioneer or check out the last Panasonic VT models before they were discontinued.

Thanks for the feedback guys......please add more if you wish.

My situation: I'm currently living in a 1 bedroom apartment, the livingroom area isn't large. The distance from being seated on the sofa to where the TV goes is about 9-10 feet. A 42" screen is going to be plenty sufficient. Not to mention there isn't tons of space to where the TV goes (I'm not wall mounting it either.....just a stand). My apartment is situated on the north/east side of the building, so I don't get direct sun inside, but the windows and sliding door allow natural light in. All have vertical blinds which block out a lot of light when closed so the room can be made quite dark.

Ceiling projectors can be a nice set up, but this place I am renting really isn't set up for that. Perhaps a consideration when I buy another house, but even then it'll have to have a room that suits that kind of set up.
