M20 running over 200°F

    M20 running over 200°F

    Recently boosted my m20b25 and switched mechanical fan to electric. I am thinking my fan isn't providing enough airflow. I will run the motor at 205 degrees. Not running it really hard though. Should I just get a better fan. Any info would be great thanks!

    I did the same thing with a thin SPAL eBay fan. 200F isn't uncommon. Stock is 192F and that had a clutch fan in it. Going to an electric isn't going to keep consistent temperatures so you have to keep that in mind.

      How large is the electric fan?

      Did you remove the fan shroud when the mechanical fan was removed?

        Never had the shroud. 12" fan ebay special lol. New thermostat and water pump. 12" fan must be the obvious reason because it is tiny. Wasn't sure if it is bad to run the motor that hot daily. Guessing a little cooler would be better for it. And also better performance

          yup - the 12" fan is too small.

          I think 16" is the recommended size - but I've never converted one myself so search around in the forums for confirmation.

            I have an electric fan and my temperatures are pretty consistent, only vary by like 5-10 degrees. I have it wired up to be turned on by a switch so I can have it consistently on, or turn it on when I'm stuck in traffic. My car runs at or below the quarter mark on the temp gauge when driving with the fan off, and when stuck in traffic with the fan on, it's on the quarter mark.

              If you have high temps when you're stopped, you can blame the fan.

              If it stays up at cruise, (35+) it's probably the thermostat.

              If it CLIMBS at cruise or under hard throttle, blame the radiator.

              Over about 25 mph, natural airflow is more than any fan can manage
