    Clutch options for turbo application

    Hey Guys,

Just finished up my turbo build and it wont be going anywhere anytime soon due to the need for some troubleshooting and its snowing out here in CT. Currently it has the stock clutch in it which I feel I will be able to move the car around and get a base tune going on it. I have modest power expectations. <400hp. Car is currently running MS2pnp with a t3t4 turbo. Id rather keep it way under 400 because I would like the setup to last due to the fact most of the internals are stock other than a MLS head gasket and arp studs. Also something to note is this will be a weekend driver not a DD. Not going to necessarily see the track so I don't want something too grabby, id rather side with comfort.

Clutch options I am looking at and feedback for both.

Looking at either the TCD stage 1 clutch. States it's good up to 380tq with a street-able feel

Spec 2 plus - noted up to 400tq on the spec site but bavauto says only 340tq. looking for any comments on these

Other option would be a spec stage 3 which is the cheapest option but I've heard the comfort level drops with the puck type setup. good up to 425

Any feedback or comments related to these would be helpful. I am leaning towards the spec 2 plus or the tcd as of now. have a month or two to decide before I pull the trigger.

    Thanks R3v

Budget is around $400. Was told to go with a twin disk but that is way out of my price range. Again any feedback is worth it.

I have the TCD Stage 2 w/ the 8-puck clutch for a turbo weekend driver that sees occasional track time. It feels just slightly heavier than stock and is still drivable on the street imo. It's def grabbier, but it isn't too bad.

You also have to keep in mind that the torque rating on clutches are at the flywheel, so 380ftlbs flywheel is roughly 325ftlbs at the wheels assuming 15% drivetrain loss.

I went with the clutchmasters stage 1 organic face and jb racing light wheel flywheel combo. Total was $776, but the flywheel is just under $500 by itself. I can't seem to find it on Bimmerworld, otherwise I'd link you. The set up is noticeably more grabby than stock, but that might just be the lighter flywheel changing the feel.

I had pucked clutches in my rx-8 and I will not do that again.

Not all pucked clutches are the same. I had a 6 puck ACT on one of my previous cars and it was terrible on the street, but the 8-puck clutchmasters I have now is a nice compromise between super grabby and stock. I was able to drive it in downtown San Fransisco with little issue, hills and all.

Seems like these are good options but was thinking more along the lines of the single disk. I know the TCD clutches use some of the clutchmasters components, but not sure about the rest of the kit.

A puck clutch is a single disk, it just has pads (pucks) instead of the entire ring being clutch material.

TCD kits afaik are cluchmasters clutches and pressure plates with a throwout bearing included. I called and spoke with the owner of TCD before buying mine and he pointed me to the 8-puck for my needs. I would recommend giving him a call to see what he suggests for your application.

Fair enough. I will give him a shout and see what he says. Any comments on the spec clutches?
