World breeds pansies. Each generation gets weaker. If this was the 40s and someone did that they would get mowed down like grass. Now we have to let them take the ship, bargain with them and they probably end up living with a little money. Pirates were big in the Age of Sail... and you could fire at will on their ships. You wanna be a pirate and roll into town? Get caught you get hung. End of the story.

Criminals can now run wild on the high seas because those law abiding citizens of the world cannot defend themselves. It is fucking stupid.

I know that. So we are fine to just let them take it so it would seem.

dammit farbin, this is the 3rd post today, I have had to edit, cuz you get between me and my reply subject

        ATL:

dude I agree whole heatedly I carry a 45 every where I go and its never more than 3 feet away from me. unfortunately most countries in this world dont feel that self defense is a priority (as the people could defend them selves from the gotv's). There for since a ship docked at one of its ports is subject to that countries laws about possession of weapons by those other than govt and military. And since the merchant marines dose not fall into those categories, so there you go

All I read here was "let's all become pirates."

the only reason these pirates keep at it is because they keep getting the ransom.

ransom should never be paid. it only guarrantees more lives in jeapardy down the line.

Ok... first off, the news article states that the tanker is a VLCC (very large crude carrier). However, it says that it has a capacity of over 300,000 tons... wrong; a VLCC has a max capacity of 250,000 Tons. None-the-less; the ship is a VLCC (so less than 250k tons). Although this may sound large to some, it is dwarfed by the behemoth ULCC's (ultra large crude carriers) of today. This hijacking will have no effect on the oil/gas prices.
On another note. Those who truly think that the hijackings are staged are just ignorant. I mean com'on.
As for the defense. This is a difficult subject. Although some may seem silly, many of the non-lethal weapons that were shown in the picture on the first page are very effective. However, no-one wants to pay for them. They assume that their ship will never be attacked.... which is a pretty safe bet. However; if these countries could get a flipping NAVY together to control their crazy ass people, Americans wouldn't have to spend money on these defenses.
                        Lastly

It will have 'no effect'? Are you joking?

Gas prices spike because of the weather once the weather is predicted and nothing has happened. Sometimes as far as a week in advance. Anything related to crude oil or fuel in the news causes this to happen.

yep, none. it actually crashed because of the dubai crisis, the only reason it's up today is because it looks like they may be able to work something out with their creditors. the pirates might make up a penny of todays price but it's dwarfed by other market forces.

                            ignorance is bliss I guess?

"'Four months ago, during the monsoon rains, we decided to set up this stock exchange. We started with 15 "maritime companies" and now we are hosting 72. Ten of them have so far been successful at hijacking,' Mohammed [a wealthy former pirate who took a Reuters reporter to the facility] said. ... Piracy investor Sahra Ibrahim, a 22-year-old divorcee, was lined up with others waiting for her cut of a ransom pay-out after one of the gangs freed a Spanish tuna fishing vessel. 'I am waiting for my share after I contributed a rocket-propelled grenade for the operation,' she said, adding that she got the weapon from her ex-husband in alimony. 'I am really happy and lucky. I have made $75,000 in only 38 days since I joined the "company."
