the point is that from 2000 on our economy has been suffering and so we kept interest rates low so money will continue to flow

in 2007 the interest rates were raised to 3.5%. now they are about to be raised to 6.8% so this bill is reiterating the 2007 program (which you already posted you agreed was a good program) and making it a little sweeter for people willing to work in low-income communities for public service by forgiving their loans after 5 years of consistent payment instead of ten.

all the other stuff you are bitching about is just nonsense derailing the thread
So basically, proven wrong and changing subject?

The student loan forgiveness act is NOT limited to just public service. Can you not read? Or just too lazy to?

Just because the interest rates were dropped for one period in time, does that mean we should keep them low forever? And cut Pell grants because of this?

I think their commitment should be ten years. If working in low-income communities or public service is important, why reduce that??

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Does posting from the People's Republic of California make your illogical points valid in your eyes?

Tell me how 40% of a total can double and make the total greater than double its original value alone? That's not about any incorrect information, that's a mathematical principle.

How does historical rates disprove ones since then? Does the price trend of gas from 2001 to 2008 prove the price trend from 2009 to 2011?

I think anyone who cares to read up on my posts and think about the issues has enough information at this point.
I am shocked anyone would want your opinions or actually pay you for them.
I think anyone who cares to read up on the subject can actually find relevant data that back up claims, rather than wanting to read biased uninformed opinion.

As the article you linked points out, some colleges have only risen 5.6% but others have risen by as much as 12%.

a student in our UC system has experienced the 40% increase you're referencing in the past 3-4 years alone. and yes, housing, food, and energy has also increased. I don't have the food costs in front of me but gas has more than doubled since 2001 if my memory is correct.

that's my point in using common sense. everyone posting here has been alive for the past ten years so we all know that you're talking out your ass when you question whether costs have risen double or nearly double or even anything. it doesn't even matter because even if they stayed the same the interest rates are going to double later this year and this bill is being passed to cap them at the current rate of 3.5% so they don't double for students who are already out of college and in their jobs right now struggling to pay their student loans.
So now you're not basing the cost of tuition on the cost of tuition but the change in the economy? 5.6% is the AVERAGE. Some colleges, like in the People's Republic of California, have increased more, but that doesn't mean EVERY COLLEGE HAS.

Has food costs DOUBLED? Housing DOUBLED? Heat and electricity DOUBLED?

Anyone who actually cares to research DATA and information and not just base their opinion on "common sense" aka assumptions can see that costs have not DOUBLED.

And the bill capping a fixed 3.4% rate on student loans HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY OUT OF COLLEGE. You are so ignorant it hurts. It would only apply to new loans. My past 6.8% loans will not change either way, nor will people who got 3.4% loans last year.

IF you put that on your resume, you might want to spell it "chauffeur". Pity they don't teach people how to spell in school anymore. Did they teach you to read? I bet that guy that works for MIT can read and spell.
