    Gas gauge not working

Today, I was driving on the freeway. Gas gauge was working just as normal. A few minutes later, I notice it was at empty. Tapped it and it wasn't coming on. Thought that was strange, but remembered I only had about 1/8th of a tank left and was out driving in the country with no gas stations for about 20 miles. I figured I had about 30 miles left...kept driving, made it 50 miles or so and the light hadn't come on yet, which I thought was weird, because I was sure I was almost out of fuel. As I was driving back to my shop, the gauge was flickering. Not flickering or doing anything any longer.

Went back to my shop, changed the gauge and SI board. Went to change the in-tank sending unit for shits and giggles and one of the nuts was stripped, so I'm kind of at a loss of what to do there, because it won't come out. Gauge still is not working.

I don't care if the gauge works really (would be nice,) but I need the light to at least come on. Any ideas on what the hell is going on?

    Any help is most appreciated!

    -Austin

EDIT: changed in-tank sending unit, still doesn't work. Fuck!

EDIT 2: changed secondary sending unit (only a few months old,) and it took a shit. Pretty sure this is my problem. Carry on...

i took my gauge cluster out the other day, my tach and temp gauge worked fine, now i have to tap on them to get them to turn on. But once i do that they work fine, any ideas? Not trying to thread jack i just figured the solution to mine or your problem might help one another.
      Thanks

As stated above, changed it with a known working one.

Your SI board batteries are old and on their way out. I could smack my cluster with my hand all day and the gauge won't turn on. That's not the problem.

it's just weird because they functioned with no problem before i took it out, all i did was put a new plastic piece over the front because mine was cracked and now they are on the fritz

okay, for the last time ---

THE SPEEDOMETER AND GAS GAUGE DO NOT NEED THE SI BOARD

            okay? good. :)

I don't think the temp gauge does either, but I haven't tested it yet. the tach does (and the MPG gauge won't work without the tach working).

              According to the Haynes manual...

"The SI board controls the service indicator lights and several instruments; namely the Tach and Temp gauge. Signs of a faulty SI board (in most cases low or dead SI batteries) are sporadic and inconsistent readings from the Tach and Temp gauges, background radio noise, and the inability to reset the SI lights. Haynes Repair Manual (section 12)"

well, I said I don't think, because I haven't physically tested it. :) the temp signal definitely goes to the SI board though, it's part of how it calculates the inverval for the SI lights.

I have tested the fuel and speedometer gauges, and they don't even need the SI board plugged in to work.

can you buy just the batteries or do i need to source a whole new board?

Batteries Plus will do the whole battery installation for about $10. Just bring the board to them.
