Was thinking of making a roll bar for my e30. What kind of steel should I use? Thickness?

Go to your local hardware store and buy some pvc pipe.

to make the template. make sure its the real hardened pvc though. the other stuff will melt totally when your welding and cause you to blow holes through the material.

Why do I need to make a template. I was just going to get the dimensions and then just bend the tubing

no no no, thats all wrong. you want to use the pvc pipe to start. you get your dimensions made with that. you can weld the pvc piping, just get your heat and wire speed settings right and you'll be fine. you'd rather mess up with pvc than your expensive piping.

i've welded the pvc a hundred times in my autoshop class doing roll bars for our VARA series 510 race car.

Yea me and jesse did some bracing with PVC back in the good ole days. I dont have that car anymore but we had front and rear braces and just a simple headache bar. Never went full on rollcage though

This guys not full of shit either, I've seen his work personally in PERSON personally. The key is getting the heat just right. People will tell you ah nah man you're a dumbass for using PVC pipe. But don't knock it till you see it in person.

Well we have a lot of tubing in our metal shop at school, so messing one up isn't a big issue , but can you seriously weld pvc?
