My car is an 87 325is I never hooked it up when I did my swap. I have a question about it the wire coming off the cluster from the speedo which plug do I conect it to there is two? They are both blue with a yellow stripe. It shouldnt matter should it. doesnt one go to the obc.

ok, ive gotten a LOT of emails pm's like this in the last week .
let me try to clearify. Ususally i get on my soap box and preach 'learn how to read and etm" and "you MUST make your own wiring chart" ... BUT.... i see this issue popping up a lot..... So, here's what i know.
DO I NEED A SPEED SIGNAL?
unless you have a custom chip that deletes the speed signal, you NEED the speed signal hooked up to the dme . If it is not hooked up, your ignition, fueling, load map, rev liimit and vanos will be effected.....IN A BAD WAY. if the dme does not think your car is moving, and it will limit / detune the motor.
IS MY SPEED SIGNAL HOOKED UP?
check with a scanning tool, like a gt-1. or use the peake tool to read the stored codes in the dme. it will display "speed signal" error codes. ...... oh wait. I forgot. this is R3V....... put your car on a hill, clutch in, engine idling, not moving. should be 7-800 rpms. now, without touching the gas pedal, (engine still running, clutch still in) remove the brake and allow the car to roll forward. as the speedo begins to register, you should notice the rpm's raise to 900-1000. VIOLA.
SO WHERE IS THE SIGNAL?
on later 87+ (verify with YOUR CARS wiring diagrams) it comes from the cluster to the cruise control, to the obc and to the dme..... via the c101 p14. its a BLK/WHT (standard e30's) or a BLU/YEL wire (some e30 m3's). (BLK/WHT = BLACK wire / WHITE stripe. )
on earlier 87- (verify with YOUR CARS wiring diagrams) it comes from the cluster and goes to the obc and cruise control unit.
plugs on back of cluster
c1 = blue 26 pin connector
c2 = white 26 pin connector
c3 = yellow connector
for an 86 e30 (usa car.) brown wire / red stripe = br/rd
c2 p12 br/rd - speed signal input from diff to speedo
c3 p26 br/rd - speed signal output from speedo to obc
c6 bu/yl - speed signal output from speedo to cruise
obc p21 br/rd - speed signal output from speedo to obc
WHERE DOES THE SIGNAL GO?
the signal goes to the dme.
it does depend on which dme / harness you are using, but typically its at the x20p14. (verify with YOUR DME / HARNESS wiring diagrams)
e36 (m50tu, s50, s50b32) x20 p14 is a BLK/WHT wire.
e34 (m50) x20 p14 is a BRN/RD wire.
MORE TO COME.....
i guess a little search never hurt either.....
hope this helps.
cheers, jasonLast edited by Jason89i; 09-16-2009, 02:49 PM.

Thats great info all in one place.
But mines connected to a green plug on the back of the cluster 87 325is built 12/86. I havnt driven my car since I hooked it up but I do know the idle raised up.Last edited by 416stroker; 09-17-2009, 12:06 AM.84 318I Delphin RIP

the idle should ONLY raise, IF the car is in motion.
what green plug? is it c6? did you wire the car?

YA it does. I have not driven ran it on stands it idles at 1k in gear now. It has no axles on it . I figured I dhook up the speed sensor and make everything better looking scince I was waiting on axels . So I dont know if Ill see a differnce in power and how smooth it runs under a full load. I just hope it leans out.
I wired the car. I used C6 the color On the back of the cluster is green on my car. It has a VDO cluster.Last edited by 416stroker; 09-17-2009, 10:08 PM.84 318I Delphin RIP

Jason - does this "SPEED SIGNAL" apply to m30 motronic 1.3 swaps? (e32/e34 m30b35 harness and 179 ecu into EARLY 84 chassis) My car only has two main cluster plugs and 1 single wire going to the back of the speedo/odo meter. I had to also add two more for the check engine light.
My car is an 84, would this apply?
for an 86 e30 (usa car.) brown wire / red stripe = br/rd
c2 p12 br/rd - speed signal input from diff to speedo
c3 p26 br/rd - speed signal output from speedo to obc
c6 bu/yl - speed signal output from speedo to cruise
My notes on pin 14 in the 25 pin x20 connector used in 91 b35 cars.
14 SW/WS - goes to pin 29 of DME and to instrument cluster check control and to vehicle speed output X502 connector pin 16 or 18
14 SW/WS - ON EML CAR - goes to pin 3 of EML Unit, and to instrument cluster check control and instrument cluster vehicle speed output
14 - SW/WS on one end speed signal for instrument cluster/check control and (SW/WS with EML or BR/RT w/o eML) on other end.Last edited by Jean; 09-17-2009, 11:58 PM.Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

Yeah, my car doesn't seem to be running rich or anything. Idle is at about 800rpm, if I let it coast in 2nd gear it's at about the same rpm as well. Pulls strong in gears.
I would love to know if this is something needed with the motronic 1.3Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

back on topic......really dont know anything about the m30's. i QUICKLY looked over the wiring diagram for the 91 m30b35 motronic 1.3. your notes look correct. i did see where the motronic 1.3 is looking for a vehicle speed input.... but i dont know the m30's, i dont know what the lack of sigal would effected. i would definately hook it up though.

Is this wire in the C101 connector, or is it seperate?
Would it need to be connected in a NV M50B25 in a 91 318is?
