Subaru Foresters, what do you guys think?

I'm still toying with the idea of getting something for winter driving/hauling my DH bike/going places I'd rather not take my e30 and I've noticed a few Foresters for sale near me at what seems to be reasonable prices. What do you guys think of them and how is their longevity? Most of the ones I would actually by able to justify affording have well over 100k, which doesn't scare me on BMWs or Volvos, but it does one anything else...

Japanese automakers are top notch in reliability, only ones i've had problems with were old (80s and very early 90s) Hondas.

I've driven some Subarus, nice cars.

I personally rather have an Impreza Wagon/Outback though.

I'm liking the idea of a small-ish, suv-ish thing for daily use. Perhaps a brush guard, skid plate, driving lights and some nice tires too? :)

my mom has a forester. she loves it. It's peppy. My complaints are that it looks dumb to me, it's a friggin greenhouse, so much glass when it's sunny -- you'll sweat, and if you have broad shoulders like me you'll feel confined in the skinny seats.

she had a problem with the a/c brain going bad, but other than that it's been problem free for five years. tires are pricey for a little car though.

my ex's mom had a forester. they are nice, a bit cramped in back compared to an suv, but not bad.

oh, then again i'm 6'3 and 190lbs...so i don't really count for the average population's assessment of backseat space.

I drove a stick forester. Not a rocket, but nice enough. AWD owns.

SUVs are completely fucking stupid when there's wagons that getter much better MPG and drive better, but give little in utility or space.

If you're buying a high mileage example, get it thoroughly checked out by a pro before you buy it. Fixing awd drivetrains can get seriously expensive very quickly.

Yeah, it's kind of dike-ish here too, but I'd put some chunky tires and a brush guard on it to counteract the usual impressions. There Will Be No Rainbow Stickers.
