    1991 M-Technic Sterling Cabrio - Seattle

Up for sale (hesitantly…) is my rare 1991 BMW M technic cabrio. I am moving into the city and will only have one parking spot. I purchased the car in 2007 at 106,000 miles and it currently sits at just over 117,000 miles. This is a real M technic (Option Code 771), not the more common M technic “Appearance Package” (Option Code 770). Only 149 M technic cabs were built and were only available in Sterling silver, Brilliant red and Macau blue. The features of the M technic (Code 771) are as follows:

    M-tech II Body Kit
M technic trunk and grill badges
    M technic suspension
    M technic door sills
    15” wheels
Extended leather (stitched leather trim on the shifter, console and door panels)
M cloth interior (see notes below)

For more information on M-technic cabrios go to http://www.e30ic.com/M-technic.htm - the sterling silber pictured is this car.

    Replaced in the last 10k
    - O2 Censor at 117k
    - Rear Upper Shock Mount
    - Fuel pump
    - Bavarian Autosport Hose Kit
    - Motor mounts
    - Sway bar links
    - Wheels – OZ Racing 15 “ real 3-piece. Purchased as color mismatched
deadstock then powder-coated centers black to match. In perfect
shape. Includes rare 10-point bolt tool to take apart barrels for
    refinishing.
    - Tires – BF Goodrich Traction T/A 205/55/15
    - Brakes – Turner Motorsport e30 kit w/ stainless steel lines and Axxis
    metal master pads
    - Spark plugs at 117k
    - Ignition wire set
    - Wire harness
    - Timing belt
    - Convertible Boot Cap
    - Oil Pan
    - Power Steering Rack
    - Windshield
    - New Battery at 113k
    - Recovered leather on back seat

    Previous Owner (what I know)
    - Replaced Valmet alternator with Bosch alternator around 100k
    - Air conditioner converted to R134 at 100k
    - Replaced sway bar brackets and tie rods

Known Issues (Reflected in the price) –

As you may notice it does not have the m technic cloth. After much research I believe the original owner had the seats recovered in a different cloth as seen in the pictures. I know that they just covered over the m tech cloth on the door panels, but used glue to secure the new cloth, rendering the old cloth useless. I am fairly certain that the old cloth is under the new on the seats as well, but I have come to like the look it has now and haven’t thought it worth the effort or $$$ to return to factory spec. It does not have heated seats.

The convertible top is in great shape except for a 1.5” tear near the passenger rear qtr panel, which was patched from the inside. It is not very noticeable. The rear window is clear and not yellowed. The top has been converted to manual operation.

As with most e30’s, the dash has 2 small cracks.

Boot lid brake light just went out, will be replaced.

Missing some of the tools from the trunk tool kit. Working on finding these.

Small dent near driver side headlight (see pictures)

Front m tech valence could use a respray

Since my ownership (106k) the oil has been changed 4 times using Castrol GTX 5w-30. The previous owner, Mark Prusynski, was president of his local Porsche club and meticulous with maintenance as well.

The oil was just changed at 117k and the car has new tabs as of 5/12/09.

Like I said, I am very hesitant to let this go. This car is rare and therefore not for everybody. With summer almost here, this is the perfect beach cruiser. I get compliments and looks everywhere when I take her out. Just the other day guys at the dealership were coming out to look it over and barely gave the Dinan M5 parked next to me a second look.

$7,800. Reasonable offers will be considered. Carfax available on request.

Very nice car - always in the pix from the PNW E30 picnic. One of these just sold on the board (http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=138310) with the M-tech cloth & 1/2 the miles for about the same price. A 91 Macau blu M-Tec recently sold in So Ca (also to a member) with a full turbo set up on it for right around your asking price. Not saying your price is wrong, just letting you know the range where $$ have recently changed hands on these rare cars. GL with the sale.

Yes, I saw the thread for that one (I believe it sold the first day it was posted here) and am familiar with M-tech transactions in the past few years. My car is very well documented and in great shape and needs nothing at the moment. I believe it to be priced fairly. PNW e30's tend to fetch a higher premium as I have seen regular late model cabs go for 6k+ in the same condition. I paid $7500 for the car in 2007 have put on 11,000 miles since and, as my records show, have put in thousands more to get it to where it is now. The new owner will be getting a deal. Not all enthusiasts are looking for a turbo or built car. This is perfect for someone looking for a well maintained, reliable, tastefully modified, classic in the making, cruiser.

I just got finished posting that these cars don't come up for sale often and now there's 2 Sterling silvers on the same board lol. To be honest, I feel these cars should be worth more. The original owner should be shot in the leg, BTW. I think the problem is recognition. Most people don't realize what it is and those that have an idea just think M technic refers to the bodykit. If I were you, I'd put it in the Roundel.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I do feel these cars to be great value right now. 2 years ago when I was looking for mine, I could have never found deals like the ones being had now. I have been getting a lot of interest from my local craigslist ad as well as on here and have a few showings this weekend. If needed I will advertise in Roundel. I really want it to go to someone that appreciates what it is....

I completely agree. I almost feel guilty for what I just paid for mine (the other silver one posted here). It's really worth more than some realize, which worked out for me, however I still feel kinda guilty that I didn't pay more for it - I didn't pay $7900 for it like he was originally asking. After the dealer inspection, he dropped his price but the things that were listed as "wrong" with the car were honestly just regular maintenance that we can do ourselves. He also admitted that when he first bought the car he didn't have any idea what an mtech was, let alone that he owned one. I just picked her up today. LOVE IT.

No need to feel guilty. The owner enjoyed it and was willing to part with it for whatever your offer was. I passed on my Macao blue car twice but after adding up the numbers...the suspension/turbo/megasquirt/rebuilt engine/5 speed swap, and of course being a full M technic cab, I decided it was well worth it. In the end, it depends on what a car like this is worth to you. My original plan was to get a coupe and put an M tech II kit on it or get a white appearance package car for less money.
