    6spd e30

i found a wrecked z4 3.0l with a 6 speed tranny. what else should i grab from the car to make the swap into my car easier? the whole car is intact and ready to strip.

there is no way to test the tranny without the engine running or the car driving?

does anyone think attempting this swap is a bad idea? couldn't be any worse than my e36 m3 5 lug or plastic bumper swap.

i might be able to snag it all for 1500. good price?

Seriously, if the engin is good just swap the whole damn thing.
Hemingway said it best. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”

i have yet to see the combo but the guy said the motor is not running. he stole some parts off of it for his car. maybe it is some kind of coverup for a tranny that doesn't work....

anyone have idea on how to test the tranny while it is out of the car?

open it up, look inside of it. see if there are any metal shavings in it either laying in the bottom of it or maybe on the magnetic drain plug...if you have snap ring pliers then take the gears apart and check the syncros too see if they are damaged or not...

if you dont have the tools see if you can get it to switch gears by moving the shift forks forward and backward. you can do this by removing the cover on top of the tranny. beside the cover should be a metal tab thingy where the shift linkage hooks up to. you could also move this forward and backward to see if it responds and shifts into gear. if you do pick this all up make sure you get the engine (whats left of it), ecu, wiring harness, trans

if you want to put the tranny in you are going to need the engine because im pretty sure that tranny will not bolt up to your stock engine

If it came off of any of the 6 cylinder cars (sans M30) it will bolt to an M20. You will have to do some fabricating when it comes to the transmission mount, but that is about it. Make sure you get the flywheel and starter from it to use. For all of the other stuff, use the appropriate clutch, shift linkage (maybe, just grab it with everything), and slave cylinder, that match the car the tranny came from (ie E46 tranny; E46 slave cylinder, clutch, etc).

the guy wants 2500 for it now. so i am not too keen on jumping on it. considering it has no proof of only 35,000 miles. the fluid stank like shit and was not honey coloured and not totally black.

it was still in the car though. so i could have taken everything. might call him tomorrow to tell him that he should just sell it to me at a significant price reduction.

somebody tell this crazy romanian that it isn't solid gold!

Its quite obvious that youve never seen a BMW trans much less worked on one , so why are you posting useless info in this thread ??

Riley , if the was wanting $1500 just for the 6spd then pass on it ....that is too much for it nowadays .
If it was for the whole car or for whatever you could grab then it would have been a good deal .
Now that he wants $2500 I would say definitely pass on it .

The only real issues with using the 6spd trans is the fact that the linkage and shifter will be offset by about 10-degrees .
This is a relatively easy fix if you are handy though .

The other issue would be the need for a custom lenght driveshaft , not impossible but a added expense no doubt .

how is that useless? nobody here was answering him so i prettty much just told him if he finds the tranny and can take it apart atleast look inside of it and theres shit laying around in it to not get it because it would most likely be a fucked up tranny? listen teaguer you dont have to be such an ass about everything. he asked if there was a way to test the tranny i gave him the best 2 cents i had. now please enlighten me as to what you would do to check out the tranny before buying it besides comparing prices hmm?

                        its useless because

                        1) gear sets are press fit
                        2) there is no top access panel, you are thinking hicksville toploader gearboxes found on your ford or chev
                        3) the selector rod passes through the back of the transmission, there is no metal tab "thingy".

as he said, i dont think you have ever seen a bmw transmission in the flesh.
Just a little project im working on
