    Could AFM create rough idle stall?

    Hi, I've been trying to diagnose my m42 for about 2 weeks now and every time I turn it on it dies almost immediately after leaving me only with a CEL. I did this check (pushing gas pedal 5 times) and it gave me 1215 which is a Mass Air flow sensor fault. Could this be my idle fault? I double checked all vacuum lines around the intake/valve cover so I'm sure it's somewhere else. How do I go about fixing the AFM?


    Should I try this method?


    Or should I just buy a new AFM and not mess with it?

    Please help me out fellas.

    Afm usually gives issues under load at different throttle speeds. could give idle issues tho...

      Well, I have misfires when revving also. Although the little flap inside the meter moves freely, a CEL indicating the meter is faulty has to be the issue at hand right? Could any E30 AFM work with my DME? I was thinking about going by the salvage and picking one up to test.

        Your car should start and run with no AFM on it at all. It just wont rev or run very well. Sounds like you have other issues. The missfires could be related to the AFM though. As for it not idling ya its sumthn eles.

          Yeah, you got it the car runs very badly when the AFM is disconnected but at least it runs. I've checked and checked again for vacuum leaks, god I hope it's this stupid AFM that's my problem.

            sounds like a manifold leak or vacume.
            clean the idle control valve with w-d 40.check the throttle position sensor if working prop.you should only have to adjust a afm if your car is modified like my stroker was.

              but a CEL that states 1215 Mass Air flow meter can't be the problem?

              1215 Mass Air Flow Sensor Fault The mass air flow sensor measures the amount of air that is currently being drawn into the engine. A big hole in one of your fuel injection intake boots may cause the car to stall and generate this code.

                Ok so i've double checked the icv itself and found that the side that faces up doesn't open much. Can't seem to open it with wd40 or anything. Is the arrow on the it supposed to be facing toward the engine bay or away? In other words is the arrow supposed to be going towards the intake manifold or the intake boot?

                  Does your car have the recall work done on the AFM?
                  There should be an inline resistor pack thingy in the wire connection to the afm.
