Should there be an O-ring there?

So I recently replaced the intake gaskets on my 91 325i, and since then it has had an intermittent rough idle problem(does it about half the time) and is throwing out code 1222. I also replace valve eccentrics, adjusted the valves, and put in new plugs. My question is about the oil return tube that goes from the bottom of the intake manifold down to the block with the spring on the bottom. Is the supposed to be an o-ring on the bottom of that tube where the spring is? I couldn't remember if there was one originally there, so I tried to put one on the tube but it seemed like it was stopping the manifold from going down far enough to go on, so I took the o-ring off and viola! It went right in. So now the only thing I can think of is it has a vacuum leak down there... So was there supposed to be an o-ring there?? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There must be an o-ring at both ends of the tube.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yes u do. It is recommended to get new gasket but this is R3v and we just copper spray that shit......slap biotch on and tighten to tq. Use the zip tie trick to hold the spring in place and make sure nothing falls into the pan, clean the surface. I dab a lil RTV on the t-stat housing and tq to spec.

Cut the tube in half, remove, insert seals, find a piece of oil approved hose and slip it over the two pipes and clamp it.

The seal goes above the spring?

No, below the spring. Actually down in the hole in the block.
