Much cheaper to just find an already convereted bike. A 2005-2006 DRZ400SM can be had for $2500-$3500 all day long.
Not that I've seen, 3500-4500 is about the norm.sigpic

will, the cost of conversion is sometimes as much as the price of the bike. For higher end equipment sometimes much more. Wheels=1k(full set with hubs), less if you do just rims and spokes, but gotta be able to lace and true. Brakes=couple hundred to above a grand. And the most important thing that most people forget about is a suspension revalve/respring. Even on all the tards I've owned it was necessary for a revalve and new springs. And these were factory built tards. Going from a mx bike to street tard it's pretty much mandatory. So you can add another couple hundred (usually around 500).

Oh, and don't forget tires (figure 300+) and tubes to go with. Thats not even counting any items needed to rebuild the stock bike, or street legal stuff. The main plus to the using an xr is the motor, it's a tank and hard as hell to kill. Drz's are great for someone looking for a more street oriented machine thats not gonna need alot of maintaining. But aren't real effective on the track. Even from the get go I would atleast redo the suspension.

Thats been my experience as well
You'll still need lighting and some suspension work ( not mandatory but HIGHLY recomended ). Then you'll have a supermoto that is still less capable than a bone stock DRZ400sm ( and it'll still be worth the 1500 you paid for it).
If you get a DRZ for 3500, you can more than likely ride it for 5 years and still get your 3500 back when you sell it.
