Can I use the old parts?

So my motor threw a rod, the car still drives but I stopped driving it. Im buying a junkyard motor, that I really don't know anything about but its whatever at this point.

Can I use the water pump and timing belt from my blown motor on this "new" one? they only have 4-5 thousand miles on them as they were just installed. Are they good or are they screwed from the blown motor too?

I also want to get all new gaskets for it while the motor will be out. What are all the new gaskets I should get, and what other parts should I just go ahead and replace while the motor is out? thanks guys

    water pump - yes.

    timing belt tensioner - yes.

    timing belt - NEVER!

With a junkyard motor, I highly recommend getting a compression check and cylinder leakdown check done and peei=king under the valve cover for sludge and cam wear before making any decisions on what to do next. That will tell you a lot about the engine's internal condition. Also look for obvious external oil leaks. If it has low compression or other problems its far easier to rip into it on an engine stand rather than once it is installed in the car.

Also depends on your ownership horizon. If this is a "forever" car I would replace every seal and gasket on the motor. If its something you're going to keep for a year or two or three, I'd take a cheaper approach.

Okay. the place im getting the motor from doesn't do those tests, but they check to make sure it runs at least. Are these tests easy to do when the motors pulled, or should I just have a shop do this?

What does a correct compression check and oil leakdown check look like?
