So today on my way to work my car (autotragic) suddenly had no throttle response as I was trying to pass someone on the highway. The rpms slowly dwindled down and the engine eventually just died and I rolled to the shoulder. When I tried to start it again there was this horrible squealing noise like metal on metal so I didn't try and push it further. I thought it was the timing belt snapping and sulked for the whole day until I tried to crank it again and saw that the camshaft still turned. I think the noise is coming from the starter but I have no idea how that would cause the engine to die like that on the highway. Any ideas?

How many miles on that puppy? I broke a timing belt (maintenance negligence) a few years back and the bottom end under the head I ruined started knocking a few thousand miles later. Had ~160k on her. I suppose the pistons slamming the valves didn't help the rod bearings, but the engine looked like hell on the inside anyway. Brown deposit covered everything. It was so thick you could scrape it off with your fingernail. Where are you located? I have an M20B25 and G260 in great condish that will be up for sale soon in Kennesaw.1989 325i Lachssilber Sedan
