    ujoints

are the u joints on the drive shafts replaceable?

when i drop the exshaust and heat shield for the drive shaft center bearing replacement,

i would like to replace the ujoints

are they all the same... will my local NAPA carry them?

The u-joints on a BMW drive shaft are not field replaceable. They'll be welded or staked in and will require machining as a part of the replacement.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

has anyone here with the know how performed this procedure before. Cause im wondering about this too. I dont think that i could afford a driveshaft and this would be at least worth trying.

They're only held in with tack welds about 6-8 welds on each cap. You should be able to just cut the welds and pop the caps out and then replace the u-joints and then make some tack welds on the caps. Only issue I would say ould possibly be re-balancing the driveshaft but I even doubt that for when I replace U-jointson driveshafts at work none ever need re-balancing.

So it is DIY just not as simple as removing a S-clip and removing the caps etc..

I bought mine from Mesa Performance in California. Replacement driveshaft, with u-joints that DONT require greasing - for like $350 after core return. Not bad, I don't think!

We use a company that rebuilds driveshafts. Costs $300-$350.

I wouldn't reccommend it. BMW has these made to where they are not serviceable. I'd just get a rebuilt one from Mesa or Driveline Service of Portland.

Last time I remember I thought I saw www.autohausaz.com carried them for $20 each

If you can tack weld you can tackle this.
