It works just like newer BMW’s, when you close your driver’s door, it keeps the the lights on, and then slowly fades out over a period of about 30-45 seconds(these units are no longer adjustable)
It has an added feature that when you turn the key, it dims down the light quicker, so that you can start driving.

EDIT: Note that the delay featured is only triggered by the drivers side door - opening the passenger side door simply switches the light on and off, handy if you're like me, and always getting something out of the car. All the original functions of the interior lights remain. You can still manually switch them to the "always on" or "always off" position as well.
