Cleaning up and old harness is fun

Not sure if this will help anyone, but I took a bunch of pictures as I removed a harness from a junked 535i recently as I was not happy with the harness I had on my hands with cut wires.

Now I have two harnesses to play with, one with a 20 pin connector and one with a 25 pin x20 connector. I believe somewhere in 90/91 bmw switched from the 20 pin to the newer style 25 pin round connector. So keep that in mind when you shop for a harness for your e30m30 swap. The pin outs for the 20 pin harness are easy to find and more common vs the 25 pin.

If it helps here are more pictures for reference on where what is connected. I took these for my own reference in case I forget lol.

Ignition coil and two ground connections.

Automatic harness has these additional plugs and sensor

Automatic harness TPS is different from the Manual harness TPS

    What a mess!

ICV on the top, Oil pressure switch on the bottom

    AFM

Top one is the fuel evap valve thing, then oil level sensor, Round 4 pin I am not sure, is that O2 sensor? and then 2 starter wires

    Fuel injector ends

ECU end with the extra plugs for automatic tranny

Removing old loom/tape, most of it was easy to clean as it was dried up/cracked.

    ECU end

    Center section

    Temp sensor and tps ends

    Most of it done

Starter ends, oil level sensor, and the round o2 4 pin

I am not quite sure what to do with the injector ends just yet....

I'm sure that will be very helpful to quite a bit of people. Good work.

Wow, looks good. Did you take out any wires or just re-wrap and neaten it up?

Those injector clips are such a pain in the ass, lol.

drift - that is part of the automatic e34 535i harness, it goes to a temp sensor that sits inside the e34 ecu/junction box.

e30spdfrk - i have not removed any wires yet, I want to make sure it works first before I remove those extra plugs for the automatic tranny stuff.

Looking at this graph below :

My adapter goes like this. e30 84 318i plug (left side) to e34 round 20 pin plug (right side)

            1 to 1 = D+ alternator
4 to 4 = FT coolant temp transmitter
6 to 6 = power with ignition turned on fused
            7 to 13 = fuel pump
            8 to 18 = power while starting
10 to 7 = power with ignition turned on unfused
            16 to 5 = oil pressure
            17 to 11 = Service indicator wire

The following two I have no idea if it even would make any difference connecting since I don't have a check panel.
2 is not used for static oil pressure or can be connected to 2 on the e34 harness?
15 is not used for dynamic oil pressure or can be connected to 10 on the e34 harness?

Then I think there must be a wire that goes from the e34 harness to the cluster bypassing the c101 connector? That could be PIN #9 (or 14 below as black/white) from the e34 harness, small black wire. Pin 8 on the E34 side could be MPG?

Tomorrow I am going to drop the glove box and figure out where this wire is, maybe I'll start disconnecting wires until my tach or speedo stops working?

On the E34 side of the harness the following pins are not used

            3 - blk/white
8 - blk / purple (this could be MPG lead?)
12 - grey (check engine light)
14 - blk/white (possibly used for speed input for cluster?)
            15 - brown/black (runs unloaded relays?)
            16 - yellow/white (air bag)
            17 - white/purple
            20 - brown/yellow

                I don't think so, I am thinking #12 is used with #10

But I'll have to dig through ETM to figure this one out, unless someone can confirm?

It seems that both AUTO and 5speed cars have that blower fan and temp switch listed under realoem, but googling their part numbers I can't confirm their function.

Just want to say Thanks to all who posted info on how to replace the a/c or heater fan. Great news I was able to replace mine today and it now works squeak / whine free. 1st I thought it was the Control Unit Box fan, and was crazy enough to buy one from BMW Canada for about $230.00 last fall. Well

So here is my adapter pin outs... left side is 84 318i rectangular plug, right side is round 20 pin e34/e30.

See this thread on the 3 pin connector above the glove box - http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=146117

                          1 goes to 1 d+
2 goes to 2 oil level static
                          4 goes to 4 coolant
6 goes to 6 power fused
7 goes to 13 fuel pump
8 goes to 18 power on start
10 goes to 7 power not fused
15 goes to 10 oil level dynamic
16 goes to 5 oil pressure
17 goes to 11 service indicator

Now here is where I am finding extra wires on the 20 pin C101 side that possibly need to be connected as well, maybe to the 3 pin connector?

8 pin from the round 20 pin - possibly mpg lead to the yellow/white on the 3pin connector above the glove box (black[tach], green, yellow/white[mpg])
9 pin from the round 20 pin - possibly tach?
14 pin from the round 20 pin - possibly tach again?

For those who have done this swap into an early E30, did you do anything with PINS 8, 9 and 14?
What about the 3 pin connector above the glovebox? Did the car start w/o connecting the Green wire on the 3 pin plug?

                          Thank you!

I need to go back and look at my notes for the adapter but in the mean time I am 100% sure that extra plug for the last pic is the o2 sensor plug (round 4 wire plug) was the harness from a 5 speed car? also the plug and the sensor in the dme box is in the same line as the oil psi switch (same on my m60 harness) I willing to bet the dme reads reistance on off the sensor in the box and uses that to switch from warm up to closed loop. but I am not 100% sure on that
looking for a e30m50 swap harness adapter pm me $150 shipped

This harness was from an automatic car. My other one was from a 5 speed. I think Frank used exactly the same harness as this in his b35 swap and didn't have to do anything with the extra 3 plugs on the engine harness side.

When you say it's on the same line as the oil psi switch, what do you mean?
