    M20B25 engine overhaul

    'sup people !

After having my car for 2 years and a bit, with about 233.000km on it (about 145.000 miles) i really thought it was time for an engine overhaul. Now i am not a technical expert, to put it gently ;), so two guys from a Dutch E30 forum offerred to help me out ... which actualy means that they are gonna do the overhaul and im gonna watch the topic in the projectforum .

First of all, thanks to the two guys working on my car: Flex & FrankE34

What i'll do is translate their findings, comments and general info, and post the picutures that they posted during the overhaul. If sometimes i dont know the correct translation of some parts of the car/engine, i appologize. Mayby some other Dutch guys on this forum can help me out there.

    Hope you like it.

We've got another project for/of a fellow forummember

So hereby the topic which i'll update regarding the ride of Pascal (thats me) which is a 325i M-Tech 1.

Started this weekend (august 1st) with the preperation to remove the engine..

Before that, took it for a spin offcourse. What got my attention is that it doesn't fire up properly when the engine is cold..
Something wrong with the clutch(?) too, because it had a "good" rattle and sounded dry as f*ck.

Nothing wrong with performance in low revs, in high revs it was not as agressive as it should be.

    Some pics:

Took the engine out this night (august 2nd)

When we took some stuff apart, a couple of things where clear right away: The bad firing up is probably caused by the distibutor cap, which is completely charred of every point. Actualy it looks ten times worst than it shows in the picture ;)

The source of the "good rattle" was clear too...
The thrust bearing was completely dry and all busted up.. there was even some loose and broken sh*t in the "belhuis" (sorry, dont know how to translate this last one)

Also on the "pin" where the thrust bearing is attached, you can see that its damaged, so gotta replace that too.

In the meanwhile, we've taken apart the cylinderhead..

For what we can say is that it looks like there has been worked on it before, because it looks like the "inlet guides"(?) and "valve seats"(?) are new, so they dont need any work hopefully..

And i have never removed the camshaft and rocker arm from a cylinderhead in this good shape, cause they look as good as new too!

What did got my attention is the enormous amount of black crap on the pistons.. we've never seen it like THAT. You would say that there was no real putting the pedal to the metal with this car, but my gues is that Pascal does not qualify for a slow driver (thats correct, slow is not in my vocabulary :pimp:)
On the other hand, he has got the car for "only" 2 years ...

There are three valves pretty busted, so they gotta be replaced..
Guide bearing shells look good, but some are turning a bit copper of color, so they will be replaced not a moment to soon..

The pictures show it.. and also the seats that are pretty shiny enuff

                              UPDATE:

                              [quote="FLEX"]

The "Loss of compression" issue was probably caused by bad "valve sealing"(?) (dutch: klepafdichting). But the edges of the valves have been worked on now.

The cylinderhead has already been delivered back today, kinda helps when a buddy owns the company that worked on the cylinderhead :pimp:

Valve seals back in place, and valves back in place

Valves adjusted, cylinderhead back in place, (dutch: natrekken)?, Tooth belt in place, intake in place, etc etc..
Seems like; ok, lets put all this stuff back in place "quickly", but in the meanwhile it takes quite some time to essemble everything.

                              More next time.
