For Sale NJ: 1987 325is S50 Engine Swap

Hi! Up for sale is my 1987 325is E30. *She had around 125k miles when I purchased in 09 and now has 132k. *Ok, let’s get down to the details and pics.

    Engine work:

M20 engine was replaced in August 2010 with a 1995 S50 M3 engine which currently has about 90k miles. *Engine swap was done professionally by AMS Autowerks here in Elizabeth, NJ. *Engine comes with the longer Euro headers and a UUC light Flywheel as well as the ZF Tranny that it was attached to. Tranny has a Short Shift Kit and a 6spec Clutch Kit. *All maintenance was done such as water pump, T-stat, oil change and gaskets. *I have receipts itemizing all the parts purchased to make this a true complete swap.

The exhaust was part of the swap as well and I currently run a 3”, maybe 3.5” not sure, dual pipe from the headers to an X-pipe and continues on straight back to a dual tip Magnaflow muffler. *The exhaust was very loud in the beginning but has settled in nicely and sounds like low rumbling V8 American muscle car at idle. *At high revs she sounds like an Italian sports car. *Even still, I’d probably throw in a cat in there to tone her down a bit more.

    Interior:

Car has a very clean and original tan sport interior. *Leather seats have no rips just some wear on it but all intact. *However, the seats do not spring back when you pull the recline lever. *This is something I think most e30 owners have to deal with.

Dash is clean and no cracks.

Instrument cluster has been modified to look sportier with aluminum gauge cluster rings, orange painted needles, and Alpina tach strip.

Stereo is the factory Premium Sound which includes tweeters on the front doors. *Head unit was replaced with a JVC unit which has input for iPod connectivity. *The great thing about the Head Unit is that you can change the colors on the buttons and it includes Amber. *I should also note here that I’ve replaced the factory retractable antenna with the 318ti antenna which is in the fixed position and stands at about 12”. *Much nicer look IMO.

All original BMW books are also included in the glove box which also show original owners (I’m 3rd owner) documentation of a well kept car.

    Bodywork:

No rust anywhere! *No accidents! Chassis is true and straight. *The car looks like it was repainted with the original color (Zinnoberrot) prior to me buying and paint still looks great. *Previous owner was a member on BF.C and his father worked at BMW in Virginia which is who did the paint job. *No sure why but the side mirrors look like they weren’t painted and have a faded look to them. *There are no major dents but there are a few door dings on the passenger side door. *

Bumpers have been tucked to give it a much improved aesthetic look.

I went ahead and painted the trim around the front and rear windows because it had a rusty/faded/tan look to it. *I prepped the car really good and spray painted it black (https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=182480). *I also removed the body trim which had a strip of chrome and painted that black as well. *I used Janderson’s thread for guidance (https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d+side+mirrors). *I figured, this is pretty easy, so I took my IS trunk spoiler and painted that black as well to give it a nice contrast. *For this I used the “Rubber” spray paint which you can actually peel off if you don’t like the black color look.

If I get a chance to, I’ll be mounting a rear U.S. plate filler as well which will look even better. *Either way it’ll be included in sale.

    Electronics:

I have two issues at the moment that I may or may not decide to get fixed. *(Sale price will reflect this) *First, the passenger side ballast has gone on the DDM HID kit and its no longer working. *Sometimes it will turn on but I think I’m just going to return it to DDM and get a new set since its covered under lifetime warranty. *The DDM’s are installed on a set of Bosch Euro Smilies which I purchased from a member here from Germany. *The Smilies have little to no pitting whatsoever and are in great condition. *I’ve painted the outer rings black. *

Second, and more importantly, the puller fan is not engaging when it should be. *I noticed this when I was driving a good long distance and noticed when I came to a stop that my engine temp needle kept climbing. *I pulled over and shut the engine off before any damage occurred. *I opened up the hood and wiggled the sensor and the fan would engage intermittently so I knew there must be a short or something loose. *I’m no electrical guy so I haven’t taken a look myself and would much rather pay someone to fix it. *Since then I’ve driven the car this way but this is my Sunday car so I don’t drive far and long enough for engine temp to go beyond the “Normal” range.

Again, current price is reflective of this. If i decide to fix it i'll raise my price

All windows work without issue (up and down). *The sunroof also operates normally. *Wipers also work as should. *Side mirror adjusters work.

    Suspension:

The suspension is stock all the way. *This is a 325is which includes the slightly lower factory sport suspension. *As far as I can tell there are no issues with the suspension except that it aint “Moar Low” enough. *I was going to tackle this as my next project but then I bought the vert and now my money is going towards that project. *In any case, IF I did do the suspension, I would be charging more for the car anyways.

The car could probably use new brake pads and rotors although I’ve had no issues with them. *I’m just throwing this out there since the time that I’ve owned I haven’t change them. *Then again, I only drove the car 7k miles in almost two years.

INCLUDED IN SALE: New U.S. rear Plate Filler, Spare black interior door panels, Matt-B's Custom wrapped shift boot set, Racing Dynamics Front Valance (unfinished). *That’s about $250 worth of parts.

nice car.... beautiful engine bay. That short should be too hard to track down. Just grab an Ohm meter and start going at it.

I hope something like this is around when I come back to the US. Im currently working in europe and its driving me crazy drooling over cars like this.

Well if you jiggled wiring and it started working you just need to have a good look at your electrical connections. There might be something visibly out of order, which is a pretty quick fix. If not trial and error that way will work really fast.

Anyway, not to divert too much, nice car, if its still for sale in late May Please let me know via PM. Thanks

The grill looks crooked. It's more obvious if you look at the gap. See arrow in pic above.
Thats strange the mirrors weren't painted or are faded as you said.
Do you know when the previous owner painted it?
Whats the story with that front valence?
How do you know the car was never in an accident? These things just raise a little suspicion.

Why was nothing upgraded with the swap such as suspension and brakes? Usually when people do swaps they upgrade suspension and brakes accordingly for a well balanced, well rounded car. Not even tires?
Looks like besides the swap and what was modified or removed in the process everything else on the car is stock.

When is the inspection sticker good till?

Also, it looks like the interior piece between the front seats was drilled and screwed down next to the e-brake. Did you do this? Why?

It seems like your car has some electrical gremlins. Would the car make a ~3 hour drive home with the overheating/fan issue? From your description it seems like it only started overheating when you came to a stop. Where does the needle stay when driving at speed?

I'm not trying to crap on your thread or anything. I'm genuinely interested in the car and I thought it would be better to ask these questions here than through PM because other people may have the same questions.

From the engine bay pic it looks like AC was removed.

OP, does the interior fan (blower motor) still work? i.e. does the heat work?
