    Polishing bumpers how to?

did a quick search nothing big came up so i decided to make one.

how and what is the best way to polish early model bumpers if anyone has done this post pictures of after and what steps that took to make it happen.

    thanks guys

So here is how i did it.

step one DONT USE THE OVEN CLEANER!!!!!!!

    this stuff

    or this will happen

not sure if it is corrosion or what... but it was hard to get off.....

any way the way i did it was good old fashion ELBOW GREASE!!

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED

and about 2 hours of time per bumper.

    step one

wet sand with 400 grit sandpaper until uniform on all surfaces wished to be polished.

    step two

wet sand with 2000 grit sandpaper this takes quite some time so just chill and use some elbow grease and sand away.

    step three

polish away with you polishing compound, i used white diamond polish it has a sealer after it dries to protect the shine but i will still use wax to seal it again.

    the after
it still needs to be polished one or two more times to be like chrome has mini micro scratches if you look at it just right. this is just one time hand polish.

Db's have an anodized finish. You can use metal polish but they will only look so good. The finish can be either sanded off or removed chemically leaving bare aluminum behind which can be sanded and buffed to a high shine. Polished aluminum looks great but will scratch easy and requires frequent polishing to keep the shine.

What product will remove the anodization chemically?

Cameron-I saw it somewhere that drain cleaner worked but that sounds messy and toxic. I'm taking mine to the plating company I use for stripping.

Lots of sanding to remove the anodizing. It's thick. Really thick. Pretty much step sanding up to 2000 grit then polish. Mag aluminum polish worked for me. Took me a maybe a week.

Bad pic, but it's polished. Really changes the look of a DB car.

I swear I seen that too Keith, I'll try a spot on the under side and see. I really don't feel like sanding forever.

Stuff like this makes me consider moving to California only for a second. I'll probably just bust out the electric sanders and go to work.

Lol. You'll regret starting. See how slow it strips & you'll see. Who knows DBs could be different
