g260 transmission whine, will it blow up?

My trans has the getrag rattle, and I think the whine in 1,2,3 gear has gotten a little bit louder. The layshaft bearing is probably toast, right? Will the trans eventually blow up leaving me stranded or is the whine just an annoyance?

Is there any trans oil/additive that can quiet it down a little bit for now? (BG or redline shockproof) Im considering a reman or swapping a lower mileage used getrag260 but haven't decided just yet.

Other info: Original 325e g260 with 275k filled with mt90. Prior to refill, looks like PO let it run dry, as shifter and rear seal leaked. After reseal, checked fluid again and it came out like chocolate milk.

    Thanks

run it until it pukes rocks; I had a box with broken 4th gear that I drove 3 months until 1/2 also puked, the car would drive in 3/5/R though.

Just to clarify the "GETRAG growl" is only normal in neutral with the clutch in. If you are getting a lot of noise while the transmission is in gear there is a strong possibility of further damage especially if it is known to have run without proper lubrication. These transmissions are a dime a dozen, or at least they were a few years ago. Just make sure you get the right one for your car, a 325e Getrag 260 has mag sensor holes on the bellhousing that other newer ones do not. Also some models of Getrag 260 were meant to run ATF check the sticker on the bellhousing.

no rattle with the car in gear, just the whine, weeeeeeeeeeee except in 4th gear. the car shifts pretty decent, no grinds or pop outs. just the high pitched whine. I'm going to try some additives to see if helps. Any thoughts on BG MGC?

When it comes down to it, I'm planning to get a 325i g260 and single mass flywheel. I've removed all of the motronic 1.0 sensors since my 885 head swap.
