Feeler: Pete McHenry M20B30 stroker, Miller War PSIK, getrag 245/11 dogleg, more

A little background. A while back I posted a feeler for the entire car thinking I may want to get out of the e30 game. After a couple projects on the car I was able to adjust myself and remember why people love these cars so much.

That being said, I have made some realizations of what kind of car guy I am and what kind I am not. Unfortunately, I am more the kind who wants a fun reliable daily driving machine. This is something that an m20 stroker can not give me. I hope to move up to an m/s52 (likely a 2.8, but if i can get the right deal on a 3.2 i'd bite), the m20 and the Miller kit WILL be sold and ARE for sale. The Feeler title is in place so I can get someone who is willing and able to wait while i procure the parts I need for swap. I am not looking for any down payment or pay in advance or anything crazy, Im no nigerian prince, I just want to gauge the interest and see if there is someone who wants this engine.

Now, on to the details of what I have to offer,

Engine: m20, bored and stroked to 3.0l, 284/272 camshaft, 10.3:1 compression. As stated in the title, this motor was built by Pete McHenry himself. I have had this motor in my possession since 2005 and have had it in 2 cars that each saw some time as daily drivers. Mileage on the engine is tough to say but I would put it somewhere sub 100k miles, maybe in the 70-80k range. I blew a head gasket between cylinder 4&5 last year and replaced it with a stock unit. I have not had the engine on a dyno in all of the time I have owned it. For the first 5 or 6 years the engine was run with stock m20 gear and a custom chip from Mark DSylva. For the past 4 or 5 years it has been running a miller war chip with their PSIK and one of their base tunes. This engine is still in my car, as such if someone was interested in buying and wanted a test drive first that could be arranged. I would edit: asking price $1500 for the engine, and harness (currently running an an 86 chassis). I will likely hold on to the flywheel and clutch. Miller kit can be included but will be extra, see below.

Second on the list Miller PSIK and War chip (installed in 173 ECU). Pretty self explanitory, I have the whole kit available, and will sell it all together for $500, that gets you the whole PSIK and the War chip.

Last but not least. I have been lucky enough to be the owner of a Getrag 245/11 for the past 4-5 years. For those that arent familiar this is a close ratio dogleg transmission from a select number of euro e21 323i sport models. I have no clue how many miles are on the transmission but I know it shifts smooth in all gears and doesnt make any strange noises. The only reason I am contemplating selling is because I know these are valued transmissions and I dont want to grenade it behind an m/s52. If this gets sold it I would ask $1500

I'm definitely interested. What other information do you have on the motor? Compression ratio, bore/stroke etc. Also, leak down and compression numbers? Seeing as Pete has passed on, I'd be wary of buying this without having a full build sheet. But yes, very interested in a few months.
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

      Compression 10.3:1
I do not know the bore, the crank is from either an s50 or s52, which will determine the stroke. From there given the roughly 3000cc displacement you can calculate bore. I can do this for you later.
I have a compression and leakdown tester at home. I can try to get you guys these numbers asap.

I will copy the email that I have from Pete when I get home with a few more details about the engine.

Here a couple pics i took when i did the head gasket last year. You can see the break i had between cylinders, but you can also see the cylinder walls and pistons. Doing some quick math, and knowing that the displacement is slightly below 3000cc I would assume an s50 crank with a stroke of 85.6mm and a bore of 85-85.5. 85mm bore gives 2913cc and 85.5mm bore gives 2947cc. In the email I have at home I have the "exact" displacement. I guess some might consider this a 2.9l stroker no 3.0l, but then again some might consider a m20b25 to be an m20b24.

OK I dug up an email from Pete about the engine dated May 16 2005.

"It has been bored and stroked to 2952cc. The compression ratio is 10.2:1, It has forged ultra light pistons, tool steel thin wall pins, and low drag rings. The stroker crank is a reworked forged steel unit from a late M3. All bearings, seals, waterpump, cam drive, etc are new. The cylinder head has mild porting and is fitted with a Schrick 284/272 dual pattern cam and dual valve springs. Valve guides and seals were all replaced with new. As previously noted, the extreme stroker (7/16") makes use of oil ring support rails because there is little room left above the pin for all 3 rings. This design doesnt hurt power, but it results in higher oil consumption"

Will get compression and leakdown tests completed asap, will be out of town this weekend.

Are you trying to auction this off? Or is that your asking price?

                      That is the asking price

*edit* but with the interest it is getting I feel like it may be too low. I know that's a kinda lame thing to do, but if I can get more for it I would like to. $1500 would likely be my ideal selling price, given the interest it has garnered.

thats not a b25 block is it? Also the mileage after the rebuild is ~100k miles? What year was it built?

I believe it is a b25 block. I have given all the details on the build I have. I know it was built before 2005. The mileage is an estimate, I think it had about 8k miles when I got it in 05, my car was at about 159k then, I pulled it out of that car at like 190k-ish, put it in my current car after that, and have probably pit another 10-20k on it since then. This car was not a full time daily, plus my wife and I swap driving to work. So by that math it has about 60k miles.
