Ricer Intake mod inspired by Porsche

After tuning the AFM wheel back to where it should have been, I decided to spend some time doing some work to the intake I have been meaning to get around to.

    1) Drill the "motorsport" holes in the intake box. (I have a spare box from using the top for the M30 AFM swap, so why not?) Also known as the cheese grater mod.
    2) Paint box/AFM - chipped paint off AFM, and the box was very dirty and light.
    3) Put cleaner air filter in.

    Before......gross.

Small holes at the top, where I started. The bigger dril bit was used when I got tired of ALL the small ones.

Drilled, the exterior side only. Not the front, bottom, nor back. Front too close to radiator, back to engine, bottom.....just didn't feel like it.

    Aftermath.

Painted up. Yeah, so under is still pretty dirty. And the paint ran.....so what.

    Installed.

    Engine bay shot:

    Review!
    SOUNDS BADASS!
About the same as when I tried that big cone filter on the end of the M30 AFM. Not quite as loud, nor so as aggressive.....but also no sucking sound down low. I prefer it to the cone, and should help keep heat out of the intake just as well as heatshield. Great upgrade!

can that be done with the stock air box? or just one with the M30 AFM? will it have the same effects? that sounds like a cool, easy mod to do. nice work.

yeah, stock is fine. All you need is the bottom of the airbox, and drill the far side.

Same "effects" - you know, loud intake, but it sounds cool.....not like it will fart on itself at low rpms. Sean has done this, but didn't post up pictures.

.....If only my sister didn't drop the camera that records sound.......

isnt the piece in the pic just the top portion (cover) of the airbox? did you drill the bottom too? can you tell me exactly what sides of what part of the box you drilled? thanks man,

Just the bottom sir. This is the part BELOW the air filter. Drilling above it on the top would be really shitty.

The side you drill is the side AWAY from the engine, and next to the intake draw tube.

Very, Very old news.... This was done all the way back in the early 80's with the VW clan. Works but still gets hot air in box but flows more CFM.

Cubic Feet per Minute. It's a volumemetric figure.

so how much better is a cone filter kit then this... if any? is it worth the extra money for one?

Well your limiting factor is still the engine as a whole. Starting with your throttle body then valves and cam and how efficent your engine is running.

So to answer your question I would do this to a spare lower box any day, opposed to buying a K&N setup. You can always drop a K&N factory filter in.

                      Hopes that helps.

                        Great stuff by the way.

Word. M20 is suxor to spend $$$ on. You cannot just do intake and get HP like in a Honda.

Yeah, I had a spare, if I don't like it.....do back in ~2minutes. But seriously, it sounds great.

Paint = Duplicolor Bumper Coating. Have the can lying around from black-out grill, and soon to be used on Euro Plate Filler and Euro Grills. 8)

Ah, so that's the secret to your stupidly loud intake! I could hear it in my car, driving like five metres behind you. Not even my valve tick could drown out the sound :D

Might have to do it to my airbox, love induction sounds 8)
