Can the M20 single mass flywheel be machined (and lightened) to work with the M50 and E36 transmission? I guess I'm just being cheap as I don't want to drop big bucks on a new lightweight flywheel.

i did the m50, lightened flywheel and e30 trans.....but i ran into some difficulties. never did the "i" flywheel with the e36 trans though. if you get a chance, measure the thickness of your proposed clutch assembly......(the distance from the crank mating surface to pressure plate teeth.) I have a few m3 flywheels/clutchs sitting around and can verify that the overall thicknesses of the assemblies are the same. cheers, jason

It will work. If you go with a m20 flywheel, then you just need to use m20 starter, clutch, trans, and driveshaft.

And you need to shave either the flywheel or the oil pan.91 m3Comment
