Can the M20 single mass flywheel be machined (and lightened) to work with the M50 and E36 transmission? I guess I'm just being cheap as I don't want to drop big bucks on a new lightweight flywheel.

will the 325i flywheel work with getrag 260 and m50 or not ?
some guys say it works, some say it doesnt. im in the opinion that i have to use the dual mass flywheel instead.Comment

It will work. If you go with a m20 flywheel, then you just need to use m20 starter, clutch, trans, and driveshaft.
And you need to shave either the flywheel or the oil pan.91 m3Comment

Yes, the m20 flywheel will work.
We just finished an m50 swap at work and we used:
m50tu with e36 tranny, and machined down m20 flywheel. Works great.

Did you use the M20 starter? How much material did you remove from the flywheel? What type of clutch are you running?Comment

I used M20 flywheel/clutch and starter with my M50 engine/E36 325 trans. An M20 325 propshaft fits perfect.
6mm is all that needs to be removed from the back of the flywheel as it will contact the bolts on the back of the block, see here \/ before and after.
