Since I'm getting swamped with emails on this, I'll send out a blanket email to all parties. I bought this as a commuter vehicle. Had lots of vibration problems and would cut off if you threw it into a corner. Also some idle woes. replaced the gas tank (corrosion) and the in-tank fuel pump (there's 2 on the early model of these cars), fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, cap, rotor, O2 sensor, coolant temperature sensor. also replaced drivers side front wheel bearing. 4 new tires last fall(2008) , but the front 2 have worn severely with one down to the cords on the outside edge. muffler was rusted out so at first i ran some glasspacks (you could hear me 1.5 miles away) but have replaced that with a Flowmaster that isn't as obnoxious. gutted cat. Transmission work: some of the rubber hoses burst so I was leaking transmission fluid for a while. kept adding fluid and checking the level until i could get it fixed. It was after this that i noticed the transmision would slip in top gear during cold weather. it's run fine since, just slips - the RPMS drop and then rise. This could be cured by simply a "soft" rebuild where the rubber components are replaced or driven as is. Or swap in a manual tranny, it's not terribly difficult. Haven't had any problems with the rear end/drive axles. It has a 4.10 limited slip rear end. No problems with the steering or components. Not noticed any PS leaks. Brakes are on the horizon. Brake fluid needs to be changed and the lines bled. Then pads/rotors. New rubber (or stainless if you want to upgrade) lines possibly. On to the interior: Carpet is stained and shows 20+ years of wear. Driver's side sport seat bolster is torn. Passenger seat is OK, save for a cigarette burn or two. Rear seat is in good condition. Steering wheel is stripped of the leather covering, it was frayed when I got it. Dash has several deep cracks and it looks like someone has sprayed bedliner to fill them in. power windows work, passenger side could use a new regulator but not necessary. It makes a loud noise when the window reaches the top of its travel. Sunroof works, has tilt feature. Needs a little help closing, but stays on track. No noticeable leaks. AC DOES NOT WORK. it went out a few months into ownership. I'm a 2-55 kind of guy so it didn't bother me. Temperature dial works, fan speed does not. needs a new resistor which goes under the cowl. fairly inexpensive part and a quick fix. Radio works but the power antenna has decided it doesn't feel like going up and down so it hangs out about midway through its travel. Odometer was stopped when I got it. There's small gear inside the odometer that gets damaged by the heat and warps and eventually it stops. This is common to all BMW's of the 70's and 80's. I went to attempt a repair and it fell apart in my hands so the odometer will be inaccurate. actually, it's still on the workbench. Gauge needles I painted orange to match the color of the Alpina needles. (Alpina is a BMW tuner like Saleen is to Mustangs, etc for the uninformed.) They were white from the factory. Most people paint them red like the M3's of this body style. Someone asked me why I called this an E30. It is simply a chassis designation from the factory to describe a certain type of BMW's. E30's are the 3 series from 1984-1991 (1992 convertibles). E36 is the 3 series from 1992-1998, and so on. E34 is a 5 series 89-96. Outside: Bumpers have been tucked to give it a more pleasing appearance. The factory aluminum bumpers stuck out so far many people refer to them as diving board bumpered cars. This has the 87 is front spoiler
however a cat cracked the middle section out of it. Carfax is clean, no accidents. The drivers side taillight is problematic, throws a check light on the overhead console. someone has buggered it up. Also has a crack.
Folks, thats all I can think of. Those that left me phone #'s I will follow up with you tomorrow but everyone let me know via email if you are still interested. I am out of the area for the holiday but I am contemplating coming back and driving it to greensboro and parking it at four seasons for a couple hours on Sunday if there is enough interest. Anyway, cheers and be safe.
I offered him 600 bucks in my return e-mail, we will see what happens.
This is a good price. It is the same price that I paid for my black on Black 90iS but my plastic bumbers were broken and the interior including the dash was trashed. The lady who sold mine had about thirty phone call in the two hours I was there making the deal on my car. Mine was a five speed car though.
