Please go more into detail about this hesitation. Is this when its cold, warm, hot, all the time, at speed, from stops, ect? Also did this problem start at the same time as the cooling issue? What else have you done to look into the cooling issue/ possible head gasket? Are you using/burning/leaking coolant? Milky oil? Done vacuum leak tests? Pulled the exhuast manifold to check for coolant? Car seems like a great deal just need more info on the two issues.

This. And would you consider shipping the car?

car hesitates from 2000-4000ish rpms all the time, hot or cold. hesitation has been going on for a longer time than the over-heating issues, however, slow coolant loss (as far as i could tell, not leaking from car and burning up somewhere) started with the hesitation. no coolant in oil, no white smoke. didnt do vacuum leak test or pull manifolds. before i decided to buy a new car, i figured the car should just have a well-running m20 swapped in as a cheap replacement. my price reflects the unknown nature and cost to fix the motor.

His car and mine both have basically the same problem (although mine doesn't have the heat issue).

I am personally leaning towards the AFMs. When I looked up as much info as I could find on them, it seems the design lifetime was 100,000 miles, and since more and more e30s are approaching double that, it's hard to find one that is in new condition.

Last time I drove his car, it was better than mine (that was a while ago). I've since replaced most everything on mine (cleaned and flowbenched injectors, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, sensors, etc), and it all helped to a degree, but the problem is still noticeable.

Doesn't stop me from taking it to track days or rallyxing it though. Other than it being annoying, it doesn't seem to affect anything. I'd be willing to bet that ditching the AFM will solve the problem, as would replacing it with a new AFM, but who wants to spend $600 on an AFM when the maf+war combo costs just a smidge more?

thanks, hans, but in the end the AFM was replaced with one that was working top notch in the car it came from, therefore eliminating it as the problem. im willing to bet that of the e30s around with over 200,000+ miles on them, most still have the original AFM.

Did you ever check your O2 sensor? A dirty sensor or one that is failing could be sending false readings and the engine mis-managing the fuel or air delivery at certain speeds? I dont know much about OBD1 management but cruising at those speeds in say a suby or evo would put you in closed loop, maybe simply reseting the ecu to clear the fuel maping could solve it. Might even be a fuel pump.

But like you said, just do a quick, cheap motor replacement (the price on this beaut is right for it) and be done. if there are still problems. Bam fueling.

Just throwing some ideas out there, I dont mean to insult you if you have already given everything a try. Figured if you did something simple, real quick you could make some extra $ on this.

I love this car. I dont know why.. but it is the exact car I need/want right now!

those sound like reasonable things to be checked by whomever purchases the car. i had a list of things to be replaced/checked for hesitation issues, and was just going down the line completing them. hadn't gotten to 02 sensor yet.

forgot to add, car has AC delete and rear trunk ballast removed to lighten it 100lbs or so. ABS also never work when I owned it.

Shit, I would love to pick up this! Being I just totalled my 87 325iS.. Wish you were closer to me and I would come get it next friday no questions asked.

You think it would make it 1000 miles without issues?
