FS: 1991 318is Red 138k A/C Works!

Hey guys, sorry if you're kidding around but there are some odd things about this car. I've never seen an 'IS' with a tan interior, the e36 318 has an M44 motor in it, and it was made between 90-91 (True production shows 89-91 not counting the early version). Seems like a frankenstein model.

First off... Tan is a common interior in the 318is. There are three 318is locally. All of which have Tan interiors. Strike 1...

Second, the M44 wasn't in the E36 318 until mid 96. It was an OBDII 1.9L. 92-96.5 where still OBDI 1.8L M42's. Strike 2....

And the production date of my 318is is 09/90... 318is where only brought into the states in the 1991. Strike 3.....

Sorry, my info must have been regional to LA. When I was looking for one of these new many dealerships in So. Cal were telling me that the 'is' in the 318 variant was a black only interior with a black headliner-"had" to have a black headliner. Colors were red, black, white, silver, and dark grey. I also couldn't order one with fog lights on it. If you wanted a 318 it was 4-doors only and the colors were all over the map including a funky blue cloth interior. All that I saw had a light colored headliner. While very similar cars they drove completely different. Living in LA for 20 years I've never seen anything different.

The color choices, at least by dealers, between the 318is and 325is were totally different. The 325is could be had with leather etc... Interestingly enough the dealers in LA used to hide the 318's in the back because the price was about par with an 8v GTI and anyone who test drove a 318 would buy it regardless of price over a 325 and the markup on 325's was way steeper. There were many hardtop e30's that languished on dealer lots deep into '93. I remember pricing cars with a friend and asking why there were so many used models on the lot next to the new e36's.

That's interesting indeed-I've got a near new head off of an '94 e36 318 which I was told was m44. I got it for free so I don't really care but possibly there is something interesting I can do with it(port, polish, ??). It's been wrapped up sitting on a shelf for years...I was also told that the M42 head was preferable to the M44 but I really have no idea.

Love my 318 though-I've owned 2002's (2), e12 528i, e28 M5, 535is (2), e30 318is, 325i, 325is, e34 M5 (what a piece of crap that was), and still lust over an e39 M5. The two best that I've had are the e28 535is and e30 318is. For all around usability the 318 wins in my book.

Oh also, I had a friend who is an old-school factory tech that told me about an extremely light, non-sunroof with no AC 318is that was intended for track use. I've seen two. Both driven by soccer mom types that didn't seem to know what they had or interested in selling. Who knows, maybe that was just the LA market.

I my self have owned a no-sunroof (slicktop) 318is as well as a friend of mine who is currently rebuilding his M42. Both of which have tan interior.
