If the junkyard will take it for $500 I think you should take that. One small problem, junkyards won't take a car without a title/pink slip. (As far as I understand it)

I cut up a E30 into 6 pieces and took it to a scrap yard, they wouldn't even take it for free without a pinkslip. In the end we got the pinkslip and made $80 in scrap metal value.

Rare or not, in my opinion is not worth more then $500 considering you would have to get it titled, and would have to get a engine put back in it to get it smogged so you could even register it.

Reminds me of a recent 318is that came through the shop a few weeks ago. Kid had just purchased it. After inspecting it the kid asked me how much I thought it was worth, I told him $1000 at best. He was a little bummed as he paid $2,700 for this 'rare' 318is.

He was told it had lowering springs, turned out to be stock springs someone heated with a torch and ruined, on stock shocks no less. The rear valance was heavily damaged and half assed pulled out, looked like kids did the job as it was hacked badly.

To add insult to injury the car was towed in 2 days later with a completely smoked clutch, that set him back damn near another grand, so basically he paid $3,700 for a beat up 20+ year old car.

Makes me sad to see folks who are trying to get into the E30 scene get burned by someone who got it from another person and they just beat the hell out of these cars and pass them on to the next guy.

Its a shame to see someone lose money on a car, but to burn the next guy only sours the E30 community.
