I'm curious about the rear down tubes on the cage... why are they designed
like that?

yes, bending in the trunk, and so close together.

Well IMO I don't like seeing rear bars spread apart very much, I also wanted the car the be braced further back then the rear shock towers, as you probably know e30 uni-body's behind the rear subframe are built in an H shape, with the diff being bolted in the side to side tube of the H shape, I wanted the cage tied into that H and to do that and be able to get past the shock towers the bars have to be bent out, I'm sure there are 100 different ways to make that happen, this is just the route I choose with what I had to work with.
