I'm selling my '88 M5 regretfully. Family health issues force me to sell both my e28's and probably my non-bmw racecar as well. Such is life, they are only cars.
I don't have a lot of time to go back and forth on selling cars. I actually HATE selling cars. I hate flakers. I hate people without money. I won't take the time to show this car unless you're a real buyer...WITH cash...and have taken the time to read this entire post which will cover 99.9% of everything you need to know about the car in the most honest way I can write.
If you ask me a question that has already been covered in this posting you'll probably be ignored. People that can't read shouldn't be driving anyways.
1988 BMW M5
Located in Richmond, Va
Clean/clear title in hand
Mileage: 214k showing on odometer, odo stopped working approx. 5k miles ago.
Please contact me via this website. Post in this thread or PM me.
I'm going to cover the Good and Bad. Read it all.
- Mileage
-- 214k when I bought it, odometer stopped working a week into owning it. I actually had the previous owner in the car when it stopped and we both happened to notice it during the drive. Just my luck. I've put 5k miles on it since and haven't repaired it. Not planning on fixing before selling. The car has a lot of miles, again...its not a show car. I'm not asking show car money.
-It's a driver:
-- If you don't know what this "means" then I don't know if you'd be a buyer anyways, but its not cosmetically perfect. It has some dings and scratches, but it cleans up very well. The body has rust, which will be covered below…keep reading. The paint is in good condition and hasn't seen a buffer since my ownership so I would expect it to become even better and darker if a pro really put some time into it. You can put miles on the car without worrying about hitting that magic mileage number that kills value. It's already happened. It's well used. It cleans up extremely well and turns heads…at night it looks absolutely stunning. But, the good thing is you can drive it anywhere. I can park it in a lot without feeling like I need to check every 5mins to see if someone parked next to me. It's a good solid car that you can drive like its just any old e28, but you get to walk to and from a M5 in the parking lot like a boss. I live over 45miles away from work and it see's this commute up to 6 days a week sharing daily duty between my e30. I prefer to drive this on the highway over my e30 anyways. It's so friggen comfy.
- Rust?
-- Sadly, yes. It was a Rhode Island car half its life before becoming a Va car, but even still it was back and forth between RI and VA for years. It took its toll and there is rust in the front fenders and the rear of the car. Is it noticeable, yes. Is it structural, no. I put the car on my lift before buying the car and was fully aware there was rust before even looking at the car and it still passed my "give a shit" test because I just wanted to buy an M5 that was 100% driver. It cleans up amazingly well and I can drive it whenever, where ever and I still get people that say "I can't believe you daily that!" Thats half the fun. The rust spots would definitely be fixable, but I didn't have any intentions of doing so while buying this car. I wanted to buy it, turn the key, and drive. And I did.
- It has a book of receipts:
-- I think technically I'm listed as the 3rd, but thats because the kid's father that I bought it from bought it brand new in 1988 or '89 at BMW dealer in Rhode Island and then gifted it to his son once he was in college. The kid, who is no longer a kid, used it as a second car for driving around town when he didn't want to drive his SUV and also took it on road trips with his wife. He now has a kid and mom didn't want to ride in a "old car" anymore. So...as far as I'm concerned I'm the 2nd owner because it was just in one family prior to me. I have records on this car starting in the late 90's I believe. Only one shop in Rhode Island touched the car and since dad had it…it was maintained with an open check book. If the dealer said it needed $3,000 worth of work, it was done. I have the proof in a folder. Regular maintenance has been done since day one. Big services have been completed recently as well including timing chain, ignition system replaced, gaskets, etc.
- Interior
-- The back seat is in fairly good shape. Leather is aged looking, but not cracked or ruined. The front two seats have splits in the leather, not all the electric do-dads and adjustments work. Outside lower bolster on the driver's seat is broken. Dash is cracked, small cracks in a few places. All the gauges work (except for the aforementioned odo). Shifter boot and shift knob are in bad shape. I've been searching over and over for replacements and good god they are expensive. I really don't want anything non-e28-m5 specific so I've been holding out, but to be honest they look like crap. Shifter boot is totally worn out and has a hole in it. Shift knob is definitely 200k+ mile knob. The car picks and chooses when it wants to blow heat out of the center vents, but always will blow out of the defrost and foot vents. I've just recently noticed that due to the recent cold mornings. I'll be going down the highway and suddenly the center vents will start blowing cold air while the top/bottom stay warm. It's weird. I usually just shut those off and stay warm anyway. Carpet is worn, but decent. Cleans up very well. Has an aftermarket radio and actually a gigantic sub box in the trunk. This is not my thing at all and until recently it was removed, but it was in the way at my shop so instead of it possibly being damaged I put it back in the trunk. The kid I bought it from went on and on about how awesome it sounded. I couldn't give a shit. I think its been on maybe once since I bought it. Its normally windows down or sadly I'm stuck on the phone. 3 of 4 windows work. I think the motor in the LR window is dead. Sunroof doesn't work with the button and I've never tempted fate by trying to make it open.
- Mods:
-- Euro headlights/grills, high beams are obviously lamin-x'd. Brand new rear bilstein sport shocks, lowest perch and SPAX springs, fronts struts are currently blown with SPAX springs and E90 top hats. I have two loose Bilstein Sport shocks that will either be installed on the car or go with the car that needs to go in asap to actually enjoy driving the car. But for now it looks good and its low. Previous owner had a custom glass pack exhaust welded up. Sounds VERY good. Not loud at all, not raspy at all, just quality S38 noises. E38 16" wheels with 225/50/16's in good condition with plenty of life left. Oh and it has an air filter with adapter. Thats it. It's not really modded at all.
Overall its a good car, but like I said...it a driver. I usually trade daily duty between this and my '89 325i, but I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere. I've taken this car all over NC and took this car to Bimmerfest which was a 6hr round trip, then stopped at my house and then continued on to Va Beach that night. It rides great on the highway. I actually prefer it over the E30 for trips. It's mechanically sound. Has never failed to start or left me stranded and hasn't given me any headaches throughout my (albeit short) ownership.
SOLD
Cash. No checks, no promises, no IOU's, no livestock, no excuses, no exceptions. IF you think you may have a reasonable trade to offer realize I will NOT add cash to this car to trade your vehicle. So it needs to either be a straight trade or you handing cash on top of it. My absolute preference is a 100% cash deal.

In the end you're getting an e28 M5 for less than $6,000 that you could get in and drive anywhere, no matter the weather and not feel guilty. You can be that guy who everyone see's around town in his e28 M5.
If I haven't covered anything I'll be more than happy to answer any and all questions you have, but if your first question is "does it have rust" I'm going to find you and smack you.
Thank you for looking.
