You are right, but I may get lucky and get one that holds up for a little while.

Sounds like a plan. Buy a beater to enjoy then have parts car later. My first e30 I got for $400 I did not dump $4000 into it to have a nice drivable car like others are saying. I think around $300 to get it road worthy. Then my last one I got for $800. Now I did have a bit of money into it. But it was mostly cosmetic mods. Plus take my truck I got now for a daily, I got it for $100. I got $850 into it now. That's to make it roadworthy plus some cosmetics. It's not pretty, but does the job for under a $1000.

Wrong, I never pay more than 1k for any of mine. My last one is still running strong with basic care. It boils down to how much this kid can fix.

It can be done if you already have owned an e30 and know how to make informed decisions to keep a car running. As a first e30 and only car it will be a money pit when it breaks and you need a car to get to work rather than take your time fixing it as a second car. I have bought and owned 5 sub 1k cars including two volvo 740's two e30's and a the sketchiest e21 ever. I bought an $850 e30 running on 4/6 cilanders and I was $3400 and three months into it before it was a running driving car. Basically plan on replacing the entire cooling system, tires, shocks, vacuum hoses, timing belt, distributor, spark plugs, brakes etc to be legit enough to be safe and reliable. Buying the right car is the absolute most important thing you can do.

I bought a red 1988 325is 5 speed for $1,200 from Portland Oregon with 167k miles original and drove the old gal back to Los Angeles with no probs, just depends what pops up on Craigslist and YOU would have to be the lucky guy to be the one who can convince the owner to sell it to you and know what you are getting into! I did bring tools just incase...

Thanks man, I know these members are just watching my back but I won't buy another civic again in my life. I feel like I just need to save a little longer because 2k really does get you a lot more car. And I'm not as picky as some of you enthusiast are, at least not right now, so dropping 4k into it won't happen on this one.

I don't think he really was requiring something safe and/or reliable. Its a great way to get into the e30 world. With a bentley and this site you can pretty much be told how to fix anything. I think e30's are more of time pits than money pits. Be ready for some heartbreak perhaps.

With this first beater he will either decide that he loves e30s or that they are way too much work. Personally I think they're tanks, I've been driving a beater 100 miles a day 5 days a week.

And to the young Moke: Craigslist is good but best bet is to keep your eyes open and looking when you are driving, especially when you are riding around with someone. I've found plenty of e30s by driving around and just noticing them parked in the back of a car lot or someone's driveway.
West German BMWs, they just don't make the same as they did before the wall fell.
^Case in point: Auto-Repair Technology. Everytime my car isn't starting or acting up I let it sit, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for days. But it eventually fixes itself.

Hey Joshua, I know it is hard to find good ones out there, Do the plan I told you this morning about, I will help you find one, I been though over 400 plus bmw's over 20 year plus period, Back in 1997 I had over 19 at one time that I parted out for parts or drove, I would go to auctions and pick up bmw's for sometimes as low as $100 to $200 need little to no work to major shitboxes for parts and then scrap them and made more on scrap then what I paid for them. I even bought a 1995 M3 for $2500 and drove it for a year and sold it for $2000 to my buddy's son so I can buy my M5 that is now totaled made a killing off the part out let alone the car's replacement. It all depends of location of car weather it rust or no rust how it was driven and taken care off. You can get bmw's in the price range that are running needing little to no work like what I had and wife sold to just shit parts cars that don't run. I have a few bmw's coming in this week or next, So save your money do the plan and come see me and I will hook you up on a nice bmw. As I am trying to save my money to get the E30 touring on this forum or another one similar somewhere?
