Your budget seems low for your expectations. Coming from a much newer BMW you may be looking at a 25 year old car shopping as being similar to a modern car. They need major mechanical work to be considered as reliable as their reputation, even then you would easily be able to spend another $1k or more bringing a car up to enthusiast standards. Also be prepared to buy a distant car as that usually yields the best results.

Here is the interior you desire on a very sorted and clean example:

You're not in the clean/swapped price range. Also blue and houndstooth interiors are pretty uncommon in US cars, although tan is the most common. I think you should be able to find a clean original example in your price range that will need minimal work.

Good luck finding one with A/C!

Thanks for the info. I'm relatively new to how the pricing works on these things.
I had a budget of 7k and could buy that beautiful car that you posted (The owner actually emailed me about it) but unfortunately my budget got nice big dent in it.

Anyway, I know my budget is a bit low for my standards, and I'm ok with it not being perfect. I need something to work on over the summer anyway, but I don't want a junker
I just want something that needs a little bit of work and has room for my own improvements.

My only issue right now is that I feel like my post asks for too much. That and im running out of sites to hunt on. (I don't know any besides R3vlimited, Bimmerfourms, and eBay)

Craigslist. And don't be afraid of maintenance on an m20. Very simple to learn on. You may have to forgo something like A/C and huck up the bucks to do it yourself because almost none of these cars have it anymore and they're on the old r12 system.

And the cars are nearly all 30 years
            old. They WILL have dents/dings.

Yea, I know they will, but I'm prepared to do the work necessary on my own. I just don't want a project that is going to take me ages fix up before I install my own mods.
