Just picked up an E90 for daily driving duties, so sadly, it's time to let the wagon go. 1995 525i touring, Hellrot red over black interior, ~140k miles. Purchased this car a little over 2 years ago from Massachusetts, and drove back to NC without skipping a beat. Since then, I've worked to ensure that it remains a reliable daily driver, and have added a number of enhancements and new parts to bring everything up to snuff.
Over the winter of 2013, I removed the automatic transmission, and replaced it with a 5-speed out of a 92 525i. With the swap came brand new clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and resurfaced flywheel, as well as fresh shift bushings. During the transmission swap, the rear subframe was replaced with the rear subframe from the 92 doner car. During this time the differential was resealed. The car has received a number of other new maintenance and upgrade parts, which I have a full spreadsheet for. Some of the highlights are listed below:
ENGINE
-Replaced starter with used starter that works with reinforcement bracket added
-New Raceland shorty headers replaced stock headers. New headers mate to stock mid/rear exhaust
-Rebuilt oil filter housing. Replaced o-rings and gasket against block.
-New OEM intake boot with traction control delete (light is permanently on in the instrument cluster, but it has no effect on the operations of the car)
-New OEM hoses associated with new intake boot
-New INA/OEM pulleys/tensioners/belts/bolts
-New Behr fan clutch
-New Behr radiator
-New throttle pedal cable with Garagistic aluminium bushing
-New spark plugs
-New battery
BRAKES
-Rebuilt e31 4 piston front calipers
-New e31 324x30 front rotors (minimum 16" wheels are required)
-New Purid front pads
-Centric Rebuilt e34 m5 rear calipers
-New Meyle e34 m5 300x20 rear rotors
-New PFC Z-Rated rear pads
-New ECS Tuning stainless steel brake lines
-New parking brake cables
-New parking brake hardware
EXTERIOR
-Euro front and rear trim
-OEM fog light deletes with connector/resistor to prevent a code from being thrown. No wires cut for this.
-Depo white/euro side indicators and turn indicators
-New rear hatch shocks and hardware
-New PIAA wiper blades
-New hood shocks
SUSPENSION
-New OEM M5 Touring (Nurburgring) 20mm rear sway bar with new bushings and links
-New front passenger wheel bearing replaced with FAG wheel bearing
NEW PARTS
-Lemforder transmission mounts
-Febi guibo
-OEM center support bearing
-Lemforder rear differential bushing
-Red Line transmission fluid
-75W90 GL-5 Red Line differential fluid
-New shift boot
A/C is ice cold (recharged in August 2014) with the new condenser, evaporator, fan resistor and fan, and the heat works very well. All power windows work, and the car has a brand new head unit. I haven't attempted to work/repair the sunroof. The previous owner said it worked but I haven't found the time to look into it. Heated seats work great too.
The interior is in very nice shape overall. The dash is uncracked, front and rear seats in nearly perfect condition. A couple of the door panels do suffer from the typical delamination, as pictured below. Carpet, headliner, and cargo area are all in nice shape, and the rear cargo nets are both still intact as well.
The body is overall quite straight;.no major dents/dings, paint is Hellrot (red). There is some rust present along the front radiator support and under some of the paint. Overall, the car still presents nicely.
Mechanically, the car is in great condition overall. Zero fluid leaks, tight and communicative steering, and the brakes are fantastic. The M50 engine runs quietly and flawlessly, and power is good throughout the rev-range. The rear subframe/differential bushings will likely need to be replaced at some point; there is a very slight, intermittent clunk present from the rear while shifting. I've already purchased the bushings, and they are included with the sale of the car.
The car has served as my daily driver now for 11 months, and has proven to be exceptionally reliable. The car rides well, is comfortable and quiet, and really has everything you would want in a daily and/or highway cruiser. I'm sad to see it go, but the driveway is full with 4 other vehicles.
