Dave, tell more, if you can about the dropped valve.

Are the pistons ok? I'm getting calls on what it takes to fix these, parts availability, and such.

    Alex.
Yea, I'm pretty torn as to what to do with it. A lot of time and money went into it to make it my "perfect" E30. Figured I havent touched it really since the valve, so it might be fair to let another enthusiast give it a good home.

The valve dropped at low RPM cruising speed on the highway, and was immediately shut off as soon as trouble was apparent. A borescope inspection revealed piston damage, and valve+valve seat damage on #2. I removed the cams, VANOS, and followers, then shut the hood and walked away pretty much. The cylinder walls look fine from the borescope inspection, there was zero coolant pressure loss, so the head is most likely repairable (cheers for aluminum heads!). Valves for cyl 2 would need replaced, Piston would need replaced. Piece of mind would call for the rod replaced as well. I was going to lock out the VANOS and go with Shricks, as the exhaust side was starting to become less responsive to commanded values. (plus, removing it was a right bastard, and a lope at idle sounds cool!)
