1991 e30 318i Alpine Sedan 5 spd, running/driving, $2200
Hi R3v. Up for sale is my 1991 318i sedan. Car is an original 5 speed with 230k miles on a non-working odometer and a clean title.
The chassis is generally clean with straight panels and minimal rust at the battery box, pinch welds and front lift points, and some surface rust at the bottom of the doors. The car is originally from Texas and the underside is very clean.
The car has common e30 chassis issues present, the smallest ranging from things like broken door handles, faulty lock cylinder, bulbs out in the HVAC, etc... to the biggest being the battery box rust, a worn shifter assembly and the need for a full suspension bushing rehaul front and back in the future. The car is driveable now.
Under my ownership I rehabbed the engine which is 90% complete at this point.
New parts include:
timing components, water pump and thermostat
mess under the intake removed with new vacuum hoses and coolant lines
most engine gaskets
AFM and 02 sensor
Head retapped and helicoiled for stock valve cover bolts
radiator hoses, cap and bleeder screw.
and probably much more I'm forgetting. I have receipts for everything and a receipt from a local BMW shop confirming that there are no vacuum leaks on the motor. PO said the motor is not original and I would believe it. It probably has around 100-150k miles
There are 2 problems present that keep this car from being a good daily driver.
I cannot get the temp needle on the water temp gauge to stay in the very middle. I'm not sure if this has something to do with air in the cooling system or a faulty gauge. Car never overheats badly, just slightly at stops. I've tried to bleed the system with not much luck.
Secondly a check engine code for a coolant temp sensor makes the car slightly hesitant to abrupt amounts of throttle input while cold, and is possibly causing a loss of power only at 100% throttle. I can go into these issues further if you're interested. The car starts up every time and idles for the most part, perfectly.
I'm getting rid of this car in favor of a daily I don't have to restore at the same time, and I need one fast before the snow. I love this chassis but need to revisit it at a later time. This is a good chance to pick up a minimal rust late model 5 speed e30 for cheap.
I will be happy to supply any pictures or information to interested parties. My name is Mike and my number is (847) 778-1230. I'm giving you guys on r3v until the end of the week to see if you're interested then this is going on craigslist and facebook as well.
List of problems:
-Shifter assembly
-Suspension bushings (shocks/springs/tires are good)
-leaking diff seals at axles and diff noise
-Broken front inner door handles
- drivers Lock cylinder needs to be rekeyed
-cracked dash
-hvac and outer light switch bulbs are out, Hvac panel isn't clipped in 100% and OBC works intermittently
-slight rust
-sunroof seal is unsightly but does not leak
-ODO broken
-paint is thin/scratched in places
-passenger door hinge broke and door sags
-driver late model tan sport seat needs rebuild and has one small tear. Early model black sport seat is in its place
-carpet is meh
-valve cover is slightly leaking I will probably fix
-oil drain bolt has stripped and leaks slightly. I might retap or add silicone as a band aid.
-has green coolant for now
-plastic rear bumper guard is cracked, I have a replacement
-blower motor is on its last leg
-no belt on AC condenser but everything else is there.
This is about as good as you're going to get for a clean title 5 speed late model. The car isn't perfect but cleans up well, and won't need much to make it a reliable daily.
