Went to take a look at the car.
Seller seemed to be very honest. He didn't seem to be lying. He honestly doesn't know much about BMW's or German cars in general. Example: I asked him what type of springs were on it, he said "Bilstein".
It's got Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks (I can't tell the difference, visually, between Sport/Touring/HD).
He's owned it for 1.5 months. He bought it from (and I quote) "Some guy at AJUSA", which is a local BMW/Porsche repair shop.
Odometer shows 170,xxx miles, but it does not work. Actual mileage is unknown.
Title is salvage.
He does not have any records for it.
The wheels are ATS wheels, not Borbet Type C's like I thought from the photos. Tires are Toyo Proxes FZ4, decent tread.
He says it's got a chip.
ATE Powerslots on the front. Looked to be in decent shape. Didn't check what kind of pads. OEM blank rotors on the rear.
BMP Strut Bar.
VIN: WBAAA1310LEC66119
He says the timing belt was "done recently".
He says the driveshaft u-joints are shot.
The shifter had more slop than I've ever felt in an e30 shifter.
He says the A/C works well.
The headliner is dirty and coming off in places.
The tint is scratched.
There seem to be some sort of screw-on exhaust tips.
He hasn't smogged it.
The body:
This is where the fun begins. He says he thinks the car was brought down from Canada (I don't know why he thinks that). The whole driver's side shows evidence of body filler. The respray is mediocre. The bumper/side trim was sprayed, it's peeling. There is a lot of cracking in the paint on the passenger front fender. The firewall behind the passenger seat is NOT black -- I can't recall if E30's had those painted body color from the factory or not. Perhaps it was replaced as part of the salvage rebuild? It has some black overspray on it, possibly from the respray. The paint sticker under the hood says "BMW Schwarz" (black).
Overall, I'd say it's a sub-$2000 car. I bought an 1990 325is in substantially better mechanical condition and slightly better cosmetic condition for $2200 in February/March 2005.
Just my $.02...
EDIT: I should add, I didn't ask any questions about the car over the phone because he lives 10 minutes from me. I just went to see it in person. However, if I had traveled very far to see this car I would not have been happy, at all.
