OK, Here's the quick run-down....
Its a 1990, automatic, Cinna-Red, Black Vinyl (non-sport) interior, located in San Diego area.
The good:
- 3-owner, dealer maintained, totally stock, California car.
- The motor sounds brand new. I have never heard such a smooth M20 and it trips everyone out when they here it run. None of the pulleys make any noise, the valves are dead silent. Its actually kinda crazy. Even when people re-build an M20, they don't sound like this thing. Its really pretty amazing.
- The transmission has just been rebuilt. It has about 250 miles on it.
- The transfer case was also completely rebuilt at the same time with all brand new bearings, seals, etc. using the existing chain and a known, working VC. Jack test video will be available soon.
- Not a spec of rust.
- The car is ready to be a daily driver for decades to come.
....so why did we rebuild the tranny and TC on such a low mileage car?
One guess....., yep! You got it. Somebody towed the poor thing on two wheels.
Which brings me to.....
The bad:
- The car was in an accident and did suffer a bit of minor frame rail damage behind the bumper shocks and in the strut towers. The left fender, front bumper, valance, fog lights, etc., have all been replaced with OEM parts. Based on the carfax report, this happened in 1992 and I believe the car was a dealer loaner for the first half of its mileage. It was likely in an accident under ownership of the dealership and they simply salvaged it, repaired it and sold it cheap. So yes. Unfortunately, The title is salvaged :(
However, all the body panels line up and the car is dead straight and drives like a dream.
- The car was improperly towed at some point which caused the damage to the TC and the trans which eventually caused their failure.
- The car then sat in the sun long enough to damage the paint. I'm not going to sugar coat it, the paint is trashed. The car needs to be sprayed. I almost took it to Macco, but I didn't have the heart to do it. I figured this thing was enough of a gem that the new owner could decide how much to spend on the paint.
I had to replace the sunroof panel and the only one I had left was black. I didn't think it mattered at the time b/c I thought I was going to paint it.
minor stuff:
- This is the basic model; vinyl comfort seats with heaters, sealed beam head lights, 6-button OBC, manual sun roof etc., but does have cranking AC, cruise control, etc.
- It needs tires bad, but depending on the offers I get, I will gladly buy tires for it so it is ready to drive.
- Its rolling on 14" bottle caps. The cleanest ones I've ever seen, but bottle caps none-the-less.
Bottom line:
The car is worth a lot and I know it. I also know that the title, paint, and this-n-thats of it are going to bring the value down because it will cost a few bucks to make it the perfect car it should be.
So if it were perfect and had a clean title with all the bells and whistles, options, etc., $12,000 easy.
Subtract the following:
- Accident/Salvaged Title: $2,000
- Paint: $2,500
- Minimal Options: $1,000
- Tires: $500
TOTAL: $6,000
So I am asking $6,000 for it.
You guys get the first crack at it.
I will be posting it on craigslist, then eBay very soon.
