No shit...I've asked the seller for the VIN to see if it can be imported the same way I imported my current car. Most likely not though, since it appears to be Euro-spec.

And they seem to be in good shape...hard to say for sure from crappy craigslist pics, but still.

How did you import your other car ? Like is there some sort of requirement ? Is it impossible to import a Euro Spec car ?

Someone should turn this into a sticky

              1. Send VIN to BMW Canada and request a "Letter of Compliance"

IF BMW Canada finds the car to meet US DOT and EPA standards, you're good to go.

              2. Before driving across the border, swap out the Gauge Cluster for one that has MPH (The letter of compliance that they send you will specifically state that the car meets standards provided that the gauges have been replaced for ones that use our units of measurement, so there's no way around this).

              3. Take the seller's Insurance/Ownership paperwork (you'll need all copies of it, so don't let them run off with it).

              4. Make out a Bill of Sale. Careful when you note the amount of the sale as you will be paying duty on this amount when crossing the border (I believe it's like 8% on first 1,000)

              5. When you get to customs, give them all your paperwork. They'll "federalize" the car, and give you the necessary papers to pass on to the DMV. Get to a DMV ASAP, because at this point you probably have no license plates (I didn't have ANY going through the border). I'd recommend bringing dummy plates just to get you to the DMV without any issues, because US customs does not give you a trip permit.

              6. Give DMV the paperwork you just filled out @ Customs, the previous owner's insurance/ownership paperwork, and the Bill of Sale. Remember that the amount they charge you to license the car will be based on fair market value, and that it is your responsibility to PROVE that the vehicle is worth the amount posted on the Bill of Sale. A quote from any body shop or mechanic will suffice for this, so if you have that quote ready to go, you'll save yourself having to buy a trip permit to get to the shop.

              7. Get that baby licensed, put on your new license plates, and proudly stick your new tab sticker on the back.

For a Euro-spec car, you most likely will fail @ step 1, as the car will not meet US specs. To mention a few reasons why, euro-spec cars lack side markers, have a different bumper height, and are catless from factory.

I'm pretty sure it was imported m-tech 1 from Japan. Those are indeed schnitzers...
