    FYI: E36 Non-M Z3 rack (NOT A FS AD)

I'm writing this to let everyone know. I'm not selling anything, neither am I implying any warranty whatsoever about the product (explicitly or implicitly).

I apologize if this is the wrong forum since I'm not technically selling but I didn't know where else to post.

    Here goes:

I bought a supposedly genuine E36 non-M Z3 rack (i.e. 2.7 turns ltl) BRAND NEW from a seller on ebay. I inspected the part first before buying and it looked brand new. There was a metal tag on it with BMW logo and correct part number, namely 32131092031 (actually only last seven digits were on the tag). There was no ZF marking or anything like that on the rack.

Armen, John and Matt at TNG helped install the part into my car and I just got my car today from them. First my impressions: it turns! and it is less than 3 turns lock to lock. I can't say if it is a cheap made in china part but there were no stickers on it to indicate so. The guy I picked it up from did say that his father is a big distributor of BMW parts in Taiwan and that's how they got the parts for so cheap. Normally I would hesitate because PO put a cheap rack and it started leaking like a fountain. But this was probably the cheapest and quickest option I had (no core charge!). also there was another guy on e30tech who bought from this guy and installed the part.

Armen said it's the right part and he seemed to think it was a good deal. I'm not saying he endorsed it or anything dont get me wrong and get me in trouble please. I'm not endorsing anything either.

Ebay seller ID is weidaautoparts. he said he has somewhere around 20 of these parts! there's actually another on sale right now.

he's selling them for $229 buy it now on ebay

the reason I'm being skeptical is the saying ``if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.'' but this was the best option for me as I needed a rack urgently and it's decently priced with no core charge

wanted to let everyone out there know.
    Ahmet

PS: sorry about the bold script, just trying to prevent a misunderstanding that can come to bite me in the future.

about a year ago a truck full of factory BMW parts flipped over on it's way from NJ to SC. BMW chose not to deliver any of thos parts and instead sell entire tractor trailer wholesale. Let's just say, there were TONS of steering racks.

It may be too good to be true, but it's definitely possible that it's part of that same stock being sold.

good point on both accounts. all i'm saying is for people looking for a rack it's something to consider. i can't speak for longevity of the part but it works and it's the right rack.

        admins, please move as appropriate.

I bought the same rack from the same ebay seller. No reason to believe it's anything but a genuine BMW rack. No problems so far.

Here's a synopsis of the info. I posted on e30 tech

1 092 031 is a NLA part number. 32 13 1 092 611 is the superceding part number. The part number for remanufactured non-m Z3 racks is 32 13 1 095 575, which is the part number listed on realoem. All #s refer to Z3 2.7 turns lock-to-lock racks. I was confused when I saw this Z3 rack on ebay. The seller gave me the 031 part number. So I did some research, contacted a Z3 expert named Ron Styger, and he gave me the info. My mechanic, Peerless, installed it in my 318i and it's definitely a 2.7 turn rack. Same one I have in my Z3 3.0 coupe too. Check this site and you'll see that all three of those numbers are for the Z3 rack http://www.motorprom.ru/racks/bmw/197/

The only thing that sounds a little fishy is that he told me that he only had 1 or 2 similar racks. Looks like he found a lot more in the warehouse.

Anyway, this thread just prolly be towed to the Engine/Driveline section.

How did you inspect it before you bought it? Did you pick it up in "diamond" ca? or is that supposed to be diamond bar?

Seems like a good deal, but I don't like how it went from 1 or 2 available to 20.....:-?
