I just bought a M50 pulled right out of a 94 E34 with 175k on it, came with DME, harness and of course E34 oil pan for $300 delivered to my door from a local. So many 92-99 E36 and E34 cars are hitting the parts yards these days that M50 engines are everywhere now so they just don't bring the money they used to back in the day.
Lets break this down..
Non-Vanos Engine - $300
DME - $50
AKG harness adapter - $75 (or if you can read just one make yourself very cheap)
Fidanza flywheel (used no receipt) - $100 (why would you waste this on a stock NV M50?)
M3 clutch (used - no receipt - also why install on NV M50?) - $50
E34 oil pan - $175
ebay headers with vband collector - (used - no receipts) - $100
new coolant hoses - (now used - no receipt) - $20?
transmission Z320 - $250
driveshaft - $100
short gear lever - (used - no receipt) - $50
new guibo - (now used - no receipt) - $25
new headgasket - (now used - no receipt - maintenance item) $0
new timing chain, guides, cover seals - (now used - no receipts - maintenance items) - $0
headgasket
etc. etc. etc. etc. - (I guess you're going to tell me changing the oil on time increases the value as well?)
Its not.
All this stuff together in a package deal makes it worth even less. And as mentioned before, the lack of receipts and mileage records means you ask the buyer to take your word for it with no real idea of how used the parts are.
Yeah.. a newer, faster, lower mileage long block. And that's priced from a parts reseller, I'm sure you could find an S50 or S52 for less if you searched around enough and found a private seller.
I did my swap 3 years ago and bought a whole running 92 E36 for $600. I probably had $1200 in the whole swap and that included a set of Group N NV cams.Last edited by RobertK; 01-28-2011, 07:38 AM.Comment

Thanks for the super break down Robert. I realize my price is high, but it is negotiable as with most things for sale in internet land. I think 416stroker has the right idea. You could get more by parting the high end items that don't really add much value to the performance of a NV M50 engine like the Fidenza flywheel, M3 clutch, AKG adapter, etc.Comment
